Hi!
I'm a prospective Math/CS major trying to decide which classes to take;
unfortunately, I won't be going to CalSO because I live in Europe, so I'm guessing I won't be able to get all the best classes and/or sections.

Nevertheless, would something like this work?

Math 53: I've asked and received equivalence for 1A and 1B, + I'll study the only extra part I haven't done in IB over the summer (oscillations and damping + second order ODE)

CS 61A: I plan on previewing the course as it was taught in Scheme + learn a bit more of Python

Physics 7B (to prepare for either EE40 or 42, a requirement for CS, which I need to take in a future semester; does a 7 on Physics IB Higher Level exempt one from 7A? I've heard college physics might be somewhat painful and it's best to skip if one is able to)

Breadth Course (I've already satisfied the R&C, QR, Foreign Lang, and Amer. reqs, so should I choose something from the 7-subject breadth? Which would be a good course to take? I was thinking of French 3, but would it be hard to get into because of the small class size?)

Your help is much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

7 on IB doesn’t allow you to skip 7A.

You don’t need to take physics though. EE42 doesn’t require 7B, and if you don’t have to take Phys 7ABC, then definitely don’t.

EE 42 does not list Physics 7B as a prerequisite. Take Physics 7A/7B if you are interested in taking a more math-based introductory physics course for physics and engineering majors, or you want to take EE 40 and upper division EE courses that list EE 40 (not 42) as a prerequisite. But don’t take it just because you are majoring in L&S CS.

[Office of Undergraduate Advising: 7 Course Breadth](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirement/7breadth.html) describes what courses fulfill the L&S 7 course breadth. Some courses can fulfill more than one, though each course can be used against only one. However, if you take courses that fulfill more than one, you will have more flexibility choosing breadth courses later.

For example, ESPM 50AC fulfills any one of HS, PV, or SBS, as well as American Cultures. English C77 / ESPM C12 fulfills any one of AL, BS, PV, or SBS. French 3 or 4 (but not 1 or 2) fulfills IS.

For language courses, check with the appropriate language department on placement.

If you really like math, there are [honors courses](http://math.berkeley.edu/courses_honors.html) available.

Thanks for all your help! :)

By the way, since I’m not going to CalSO, which should I sign up for first during Phase 1? Are the classes hard to get in?

And if I might pursue a minor in IEOR, are the lower-division prerequisites the same as those of the major (so I might want to take them and satisfy some breadth reqs at the same time?) Thanks!

For the minor, there are no specific lower division pre-reqs, unlike the major.

There are a list of courses to take to fulfill the minor, essentially you choose a few from the lists http://www.ieor.berkeley.edu/AcademicPrograms/Ugrad/minorreq.pdf

You need for the minor: IEOR 160/IEOR 162 (your choice of one), IEOR 131/IEOR 166/IEOR 172/STAT 134 (your choice of one), one more class from the preceeding 6 listed), and any one of IEOR 115/IEOR 130/IEOR 150/IEOR 151/IEOR 153/IEOR 165/IEOR 170/IEOR 171/E 120

Most of those courses have pre-reqs, not to take the minor but for anyone registering in the class, the predecessor knowledge that is needed. Part of your selection of courses to take towards the minor will involve selecting those that have pre-reqs you already will take for your major, otherwise you need to slot in the pre-req course sometime.

Since engineering has more limited units available to pick courses outside the long list needed for your major (and breadth/etc), the amount of ‘room’ for additional clases you have is limited. It is important to work out a potential schedule to see if you can take pre-reqs for the minor plus the four classes you need for the minor itself, plus all the other classes you will need.

As an example of the pre-reqs of the classes above,

IEOR 160 requires Math 53 and 54

IEOR 131 requires IEOR 161, IEOR 165 plus either STAT 134 or IEOR 172

IEOR 115 requires E7 or E77

Stat 134 requires a year of calc

Math/CS major :)

Take CS61A, Math 53, and then 2 other classes depending on your interests. Since you’ve fufilled R&C and only need breadth I’d recommend figuring out what else you might be interested in. Maybe economics (my guess since ur interested in IEOR) or philosophy?

Personally, I took CS61A, Math 53, Econ 1, and a freshman seminar my first semester and it was a light courseload and a decently good one for my first semester at Berkeley.

These suggestions sound great!

Yeah, I think I’ll go with 53, 61A, and breadth that would help satisfy some minor course-prerequisites.

Thanks for the detailed replies :)

Note that Math 53 and Math 54 can be taken in either order. If you want to take honors math, note that Math H54 is offered in the fall and Math H53 is offered in the spring.
