Freshman Schedule--pre-Haas: Thoughts? Is this TOO HARD or Just Right?

Here's what I've been thinking (i want to get into Haas..Econ as a backup):

Fall '12
Math 16A
Econ 1
Stat 20
Intro to Environmental Studies (Breadth)

Spring '13
Math 16B
Econ 100A (micro)
UGBA 10
German or Scandinavian Studies (R&C)

Is taking Econ 100A and UGBA 10 at the same time a bad idea?
Does this look too heavy for both semesters?
I think i'm fine with Calculus--took AP AB as a junior in HS and got a five.

Looks doable to me, but Stats 21 and Econ1 might be a risky move unless you’re positive you’ll do well in both courses. If you end up having a crappy first semester, there goes 2 prereqs… If not, it looks doable to me.

too heavy

and risky

It’s your first semester. You don’t know if you can handle the work of 3 prereq courses.

As others have said, it’s too risky. Just take a prereq every semester and for one semester take 2. You have 4 semesters. There’s no point in taking 3 in one semester.

I don’t think there’s any need to rush the pre-requisites: I’d take two at the most per semester and mix in breadth and any other major/minor pre-requisites if you are considering additional majors/minors (beyond Haas and econ). I’d concern yourself, assuming Haas is priority #1 and declaring for econ and potentially graduating early is priority #2, with making sure you do well in the pre-requisites you take per semester rather than trying to finish all of them during your first year.

If you are good enough in math to have taken calculus AB as a high school junior (two grades ahead) and get a 5 on the AP test, it seems like your schedule is pretty lightweight as far as the math (including the statistics and economics courses) goes.

Concerns about the math may be more along the lines of overconfidence or poor time management or study skills (e.g. blowing off studying for Math 16A because you already know the material but may have forgotten bits of it, or that the curve is tougher than you think because lots of other people there are repeating AP credit). Time management and study skills would apply to the other courses.

ucbalumnus:

okay, you’re the only one here saying my schedule is fine for me.

 1. So you think it’s okay that i’m taking both Econ 1 and Stat 20 at the same time my first semester?
 2. My larger concern is for 2nd semester: UGBA 10 (which i hear is tough) and Econ 100A (micro) at the SAME time. is this suicide?

Also, i’m currently taking AP Stat as a Senior in HS.

Thank you all very much by the way!

You were good enough at math to be two grades ahead of the normal sequence in high school, so it seems odd to me that you would be afraid of even the light math versions of courses (Math 16A-16B instead of 1B, Economics 100A) and introductory statistics even after having statistics in high school.

My own experience years ago was that Economics 1 and 101A were not very difficult. No idea about UGBA 10. R&C may be the riskiest course if you are unable to get into a section with a reading list that is genuinely interesting to you (check the book list in the schedule and on the department web sites).
