Freshman Schedule Questions

Do you recommend scheduling two classes back-to-back if you had one at the GPB building and the other at Pimentel?

Do you need to take Chem 1AL LEC if you sign up for Chem 1AL? Because if you do, I plan on signing up for Chem 1AL P 001 LEC for Monday 4-5P. However, this conflicts with the actual lab portion on the same day from 1-5P. How does that work?

Thanks.

GPB to Pimentel is about 0.55 miles uphill. Decide if you can do that in 10 minutes.

JustinR - the lab sections on Monday 1-5 would be taken by students who are NOT in section 001 of the lab lecture (P 001) because of the conflict. That is, if you register for Chem 1AL P 002 or P 003, you can register for Chem 1AL S 100 - 150, but not if you are in Chem 1AL P 001.

If Chem 1AL P 001 is the lecture you need to take, then pick any of the labs from Chem 1AL S 200 through Chem 1AL S 850

rider730 - Thanks for the clarification! I guess I was just under the impression that the first non-zero digit of the lecture section had to correspond with the first non-zero digit of the lab section and its lecture.

I have one more question: Does your lecture for the lab portion have to be scheduled before the actual lab? For example, if I choose to take CHEMISTRY 1AL P 003 LEC, which is on Friday from 10-11 AM, would I have to take one of the lab sections from 800-850 on the same day from 1-5 PM?

That is a schema that is used with some classes, where you can only select secondary sections whose first digit matches the primary section number - e.g. P 001 must match S 1xx

However, as you can see, the usage is not consistent between departments and even sometimes between courses. Sometimes the first digit is used for day of week, where all 1xx are on Monday.

Look at Physics 8A as an example of a class that requires that your secondary sections fit the primary choice. The primary 001 is followed by secondaries 101 to 116, then the alternate primary section 002 is listed and followed by ITS secondaries 201 to 217. Adding to the potential for confusion, each secondary is really two secondaries, a discussion and a lab.

The Chem 1AL on the other hand had its secondaries number 1xx to 8xx but only three primary choices and the three primaries were listed in sequence followed by the entire batch of secondaries. This is your clue/hint/vague suggestion that you can combine any secondary with any primary.

your lecture and lab are not required to be in any particular sequence. The instructor and GSIs will sort out the complications of different timings, won’t affect you.

Chem 1A lab lecture has been cancelled. I registered for the F 10-11a class this weekend and received the following email today:

Dear Students, for Fall 2011 the Chem 1AL lab lecture in Pimentel Hall is canceled. Instead the lab lectures will take place during the beginning of each laboratory session. Please do not change your enrollment status in the lab sections with the title CHEMISTRY 1AL S xxx LAB.

Please do not hesitate to call if you have questions. I will be either in my office or at this number: 2-0057

^ How coincidental, and what a relief! One hour less of chemistry! Thanks for sharing.

You’re welcome! Just glad to be the bearer of good news lol
