I'm going to be a physics major next year and I was thinking this for my schedule:

FWS

Elementary Italian 1

PE Class (Probably a massage one)

Physics 1116 (Can I handle this course if I self studied BC calc while in AB calc and probably got a 5?)

Math (Deciding between multivariable or "retaking" calc II, leaning towards multi)

That’s 15 credits plus a PE, right? I’d say that’s manageable, but it will be a lot of work compared to what high school was (probably) like for you; of course, that is to be expected of college. My friends who took 1116 thought it was rather difficult, but I also hear it depends heavily on the instructor. That will probably be your hardest class, multivariable should be manageable if you go to class and do homeworks. The language course may take a bit of time (I’m not sure about Italian), and the FWS again depends heavily on the instructor. My personal verdict is that it looks to be relatively time-consuming but manageable if you love the coursework (it will be hell, otherwise.) If that is only 15 credits, maybe add one buffer 3-credit course in case you want to drop one of your 4-credit courses (otherwise it would go below 12 credits, which isn’t allowed.) However, that may not be necessary because you can always switch into Physics 1112 if you find 1116 too time-consuming in the context of your other classes. Hope this helps.

Thanks that helps a lot! Would you recommend I switch out my physics class or math class for another required class like a history or something, then do it in the spring?

My tentative plan is CHEM 2150, BME 3010, CS 2800, MATH 2230, FWS, PE 1447 (17 credits and PE). I’ve already taken equivalent versions of MATH 2230 and CS 2800; Cornell’s versions will certainly be harder than what I took but should be easier for me compared to most people in the class because I already know the basic material. I also went to a pretty challenging high school so hopefully the transition will not be as hard. Is this manageable?

Several of your classes are very hard if you want a good grade in them especially as a freshman (I doubt BME 3010 will even take you) - I’ll say this much. Other than that (if you are just in them to learn), it’s manageable. Depends on how many other parts of your college life you’re willing to sacrifice for them.

So simply, this isn’t really a good first semester schedule. This is the time when you test the waters, and you can ramp up the difficulty later - but at this point, you need to adjust to college life. I’m telling you right now even if you drop one of those courses, you’ll have a pretty tough time despite how prepared you think you are (not just because of the courseload, but because you want some time to explore college life). FWS can be rougher than you think it is.
