freshman schedule

hey...i'm curious how many credits per semester an average freshman course load consists of. i'm trying to sketch out a tentative fall schedule. anyone have any ideas?

Could you tell us what your planned major is? Schedules vary quite a bit from major to major.

Mine was 16 credits first semester and 17 this semester.

it varies! i know friends who never have and never will have more than 15 unit semesters (unless they choose to double major/minor), and as for me, I'm not sure when's the next time I'm going to have LESS than 18 units...*sigh

my major will be BA in music, but i really want to minor in something completely random like architecture or french...

Average is anywhere around 16 units with a minimum of 12.

...and a max of 18.

probably a bad idea to take 18 units first semester freshman year, unless some of those units are graded credit/no credit, or pass/no pass. To each his/her own though, there are many people who can overload each semester and somehow they manage just fine.

How many classes would 18 credits be?

I've heard the music program is fairly easy (units-wise), so they highly, highly encourage music majors to double-major or minor. Good idea to minor in something unrelated so you can qualify for a Renaissance Scholarship when you graduate.

18 units is typically 5 classes.

Here's a link to the schedule of classes:

If you look at the various departments on the usc site, they usually show you what classes you take freshman year. An example is the one for computer science:

Is it possible to take 20 units (5 four unit courses) in a semester, even with a good academic record? Or is the 18 unit limit very strict? Thanks.

For 20 units or less, all you need is to ask your department advisor. In fact I don't think there are any official restrictions on registering for 20 units or less.

Registering for 21 units on the other hand is a mess, though I cannot imagine anyone ever doing that many unless they were mostly courses graded pass/no pass.

I think, registering for 20 units is a big stretch, though it depends on major. An engineering major, for example, has a lot of 2-3 unit courses so 20 units could be as many as 6 or 7 courses and that is impossible to do.

Regardless of major, before registering for more than 18 units consult with your advisor and make sure you have a really, really good reason to do so.

Thanks a lot, jbusc ( :

And remember, if you do go for 20, you'll be charged for the extra 2 units and I'm not sure how fin aid works into that.

I'll be attending USC in the fall with a Trustee scholarship and I'm hoping to complete a double major and minor in four years. To do this, I think I need to take 20 units for 2 semesters. I was hoping this would be possible with Exceptional Funding for scholarship students. I know there is an application, but does anyone know if this funding is relatively easy to obtain?

funding is way easy to get. Just be sure you have a legitimate reason and be sure to turn in your application on time
