Freshman Scholars Institute

"We write to add our warm personal congratulations to the many you have received on your admission to Princeton, and to invite you to attend the Freshman Scholars Institute (FSI), an intensive, residential summer program that provides students with an early opportunity to experience the richness and diversity of intellectual inquiry at Princeton while earning credit for two courses. We know that you are probably beginning to make plans for this summer, and we want to alert you now to the important advantages that the program offers to participants. To learn more, please visit our website: Freshman Scholars Institute.

This year, the program runs from July 18 to September 3. For students who receive any amount of Princeton grant aid, there is no charge to attend FSI; the entire cost of the program (tuition, room and board) is free. All other students will be billed for the cost of room and board (estimate: $2535.75).

Given the popularity of FSI, spaces tend to fill quickly. Although we will make every effort to accommodate invited students, we cannot guarantee admission: acceptance is on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that participation in FSI is by invitation only and is available only for students who will matriculate at Princeton.

To reserve your place, please reply to this e-mail as soon as possible, letting us know whether or not you would like to attend, or whether you need more information before you can make a decision. We will follow up with you by telephone or e-mail.

We very much hope that you will join us for what we know will be an exciting, challenging, and rewarding summer. If you have any questions about FSI, please contact us at any time."

Anyone else receive this email? Any input on the program? Would you go? And does this mean Princeton thinks im stupid?

You should go if you do not need to work this summer and can attend the program.

1) The FSI will expose you to the pace of college level courses.
2) The FSI will enable you to receive credit for two courses
3) You will have the opportunity to make new friends before September.

Many students that are invited to attend FSI have attended schools that offer fewer AP courses, they are the first in their families to go to college, or are students that have serious EC time commitments, e.g. athletes.

An invitation to attend the FSI does not mean that admissions think any less of your potential. Princeton has a 95% graduation rate in four years. Consider an invite to attend FSI as the university’s helping hand to ensure you can also graduate in four years.

hmm, its interesting because i do not believe that I fit into any of the categories of URMs, Varsity Athletes, and people who didn’t take many APs

My SAT score was low, but thats about it…here are my academic stats:

Rank: 1/500
GPA: 4.59
SAT I: 2120
AP / Honors Classes: 5 AP (12), 3 AP + 2 Honors (11), 3 Honors (10)

Even though my SAT score may be on the lower end of the spectrum for admitted students, i don’t think it was enough to warrant an invitation to FSI, and I think 8 AP classes is sufficient…the only possible reason I think I may have gotten an invitation is because I applied through QuestBridge. Maybe they sent these invitations to all QB kids?

I believe QB is hookish at least. For unhooked applicants, I believe one should have a 2300+.

Yes, I bet it was the Questbridge connection which put you on the list. Perhaps there is some (unwarranted) assumption that QB students might need more adjustment time? Your scores certainly demonstrate high ability & liklihood of success.

i didn’t have up to a 2300 and didn’t receive that email…that’'s kinda an arbitrary assumption

I few of my friends did FSI last summer, and they said it was a really good experience. I think if you have the opportunity, you should definitely do FSI.

Rtgrove, yeah a 2300+ is always good, but not necessary to get into princeton without a hook, as jobes pointed out. the 25 - 75 percentile range of scores is between 2090 - 2360

anyways, thanks for helping me clear that up

^^^
True, you don’t NEED a 2300+ to get into Princeton if you are unhooked. However, those precentile rankings are watered down thanks to hooked applicants who often don’t have as high of scores as their unhooked counterparts. I don’t think that its an ignorant assumption to say that you basically should have a 2300+ for Pton if you are unhooked as one of our own former Wharton admissions officers (Hmom) often tells students this.
