freshman scholarships?

Hello all:

D was accepted to FSU Honors.

When will we know if she is awarded a merit scholarship?

Her stats are:

GPA 3.8
Weighted 4.2
ACT 30
SAT 1290/1960

Any clue what her chances might be? What is the criteria?
UCF gave her the Pegasus, but she really likes FSU :-)

Thanks in advance, great stuff on this board!

I don't think anybody knows how hard it will be to get the scholarships this year but I would think if she got the UCF Pegasus scholarship she would also be a good candidate for the University Scholarship at FSU. They should send her a notification in the mail if she was selected and also any college credits earned for her ACT or SAT scores.

I would suggest scheduling an appointment with Admissions and with Honors simply to introduce yourself and extend your interest in the university. The competition for scholarship dollars will be intense.

I would also suggest you explore these program options, but again the competition will be substantial.

Hey,
I just called Admissions the other day and they said they are right now figuring out who qualifies for what scholarships. They said if you get a scholarship, you should an email/hard letter/ and a notification on your Online Status Check notifying you by the latest in early January. Also, the admission officer stated that if you got into Honors then "the criteria for the University Scholarship is pretty similar". So I am thinking that if your above the Honors Requirement, then you have a pretty solid chance on the University Scholarship.

I'm in the honors program, and they didn't give me a scholarship...i was also accepted last year during the second cycle, but still.

Scholarships were just posted to the Check Status Area.
She got the University Freshman Scholarship with the stats above.

Heads up that FSU Orientation registration is now open for summer and fall 2009 new students. Space at orientation sessions are first come - more information can be found at fsu.edu | new student & family programs. You have to pay your admissions deposit (if a freshmen) before registering for orientation.

More information (a check-list) of things to do after accepted (housing, immunizations, orientation, etc.) can be found at fsu.edu | newnole under the PRE-ORIENTATION link.

Unfortunately, they only award the scholarships if you apply during the first application cycle. I received it, but my friend with higher stats didn't because he applied for the second wave.

How many people get the scholarship? Just curious. It seems like they give it out a lot. Many of my friends including myself have received it. It seems like if you get accepted to honors during the first round, you get it.

Florida State's provost some time ago explained their philosophy regarding scholarships. This money supposedly comes at the expense of National Merit scholars, who tend to be students from wealthy families.

Many/most universities "buy" National Merit students with generous scholarships, but FSU determined that National Merit students do not really outperform other academically talented students at the university level. For years FSU led Florida in the number of NM kids, but then saw this was rewarding a wealthy few as opposed to those more deserving of support. FSU then declined to bid for NM students (they do award more money to in-state NM applicants, however) and instead invest in a wider population of talented students, especially those who are the first in their families to attend college.

Universities tend to tout the number of NM kids they have as being an indicator of academic excellence but FSU's view is that this is merely fluff. For some time after FSU, UF bought as many NM kids as they could then decided they were not worth all the money and cut the funding. Now we see UCF trying the same thing.
