Hi, I'm a freshman, who have always wanted to go to Yale. I had a bad point earlier, and I got 2 B's. Our classes aren't weighted, so the best GPA I can get is a 3.97. I'm a saxophone player, and I'm quite good. I've gotten 3 awards for my performance. I have not done a any community service. I was wondering what I should do if I want to get into Yale. Anything? Do I have any chance?

Get off this board right now, go do your homework, and PURSUE your musical passion!

Oh, and I also got a 25 on the ACT last year(8th grade)
The math was the prob. I've learned most of it since then.

You're so early on that it's hard NOT to have a chance yet. Uh, most colleges focus on your performance after freshman year, but on top of that, I'd recommend:

1) Get involved in student gov/newspaper/yearbook.
2) Find some EC's and volunteer work you can do consistently, and a few with passion.
3) Get involved in summer programs.
4) Research any prospective colleges so you have the required curriculum.
5) Take the most challenging classes your school has to offer.
6) Keep practicing/taking standardized tests.

There isn't a lot I can tell about you since you are very early in your high school career, but you are off to a good start, just keep where you're headed.

What kind of summer programs do you mean?

OH MY GOD. Get the hell off this board right now. You're a freshman. You should be worrying about your driving test, not the ACT.

I'm sorry! I just know that it's really competitive, and I wanna get a head start. so, summer programs? Any thoughts?

no. those two B's screwed your chances. you're destined to become homeless.

just kidding. but really- get a life. : )

Perhaps my explanation was not explanatory. Columbus did not want to find the new route to India as much as I want to go to Yale. Napolean did not want to conquer the world as much as I want to go to Yale. I really want to go to Yale. So, any thoughts on the summer programs? :)

Don't listen to all of these people telling you not to worry about it. You SHOULD start thinking about it now, God I wish I had started thinking about schools like Yale when I was a freshman and I'm sure everybody else here did too. It's very admirable on your part that somebody your age already started thinking about college. Here are the following things that you must do if you want to get into a school like Yale

-Do your best to maintain a perfect GPA, grades are the most important admissions factor in any top school

-Take all the AP or IB courses your school has to offer

-Get involved in all of the extra curricular activites that you can, like sports, clubs, community service ,national honor society, etc

-try doing something relating to the field that you plan on majoring like if you wanted to go into Biology get involved in some type of research or science fair

-do well on the SAT's

Good luck

There are tons of summer programs at many top colleges, I'd recommend googling it if you wanted to find some (I'd also see if I could find them at prospective colleges). I've heard that colleges like it when you visit/attend their campus as a high school student for any reason because it shows genuine interest. Knowing the arbitrary/subjective addmission of top schools like Yale, I'd develop my list further as well (but you're young, so you should probably focus more on what's more pressing).

Develop it how? With more EC's? I'm joining both NHA and Ruriteen(teenage community service) next year, and possibly German Club. Newspaper as well.

Here is how you get into Yale:

Excellent grades and excellent SAT or ACT scores. You should at least be in the top 10% to have a good shot and have a combine math and verbal of 1500.

Be involved. DO NOT JOIN A MILLION ECs so it will fill up the appilcation. Find one that you are passionate about and start working.

Take the hardest courseload possible. Start taking APs like its new ecstay and do the IB thing if your school dont have APs.

Be friendly and nice to everyone at your school and get to know your conselors so they will write a nice recommendation when time comes.

Dont go to Random summer program that ask for $5,000. Just do coummunity service.

Play a sport. I dont know, join the golf team or something and start putting away.

Then maybe you have a above average chance if you do all these perfectly. But Yale might tell you that you are not good enough anyway.

:)

Thanks. I might have to substitute sax for sports, since I suck at them.

Be open minded about what college you want to go to. Check out any college you get the chance to. Don't just limit yourself to Yale because no matter how good your stats are, it's a dice roll with the Ivies

Nope, sax won't do. You must join the football team. Sorry, the Ivies have enough band geeks.

Are you kidding, cause I'm not kidding about the sports. My grandmother plays better center than I do.

Oh, and I'm applying to all the Ivies, not just Yale. It's just my top pick.

No, don't worry - you can stick with the sax. Don't do sports just because you think colleges will like it better.

Anyway, like someone else said, it's really hard to get into Yale, so you might want to research a few other colleges that are also good.

I will, don't worry. I figure if I'm a good applicant for enough Ivies, I'll get into one. I've just always loved the school. And thanks for the sax tip.
