freshman seminar classes

does anyone know if freshman seminar classes are taken for a letter grade or are they usually pass/fail?...secondly are they even challenging?

For me they're all pass/fail. And I believe that the philosophy behind freshman seminars is that though some might be challenging, they're really purpose is to have an interactive environment and to become acquainted with some well known scholars. Like for me I have the former head of the anthropology department/curator of one of the museums on campus/premier Maya scholar. And I know that my friends have had Stephen Greenblatt, Elaine Scarry, Noam Elkies, John Huchra, Jerome Groopman. So the program is usually more about opportunity and a different type of elective.

thanks, more replies please.
