Freshman Seminar Question

I know we are required to take a freshman seminar. If one is placed out of Writing 5 and required to take a 'freshman writing seminar' in the fall, in place of Writing 5, does this count as our freshman seminar or not? Thanks.

Hi Saila,

If you you have been place out of writing 5 and required to take a freshman seminar in the fall, yes it counts as freshman seminar and once you take the course you will have filled this requirement.

Do you have to take writing 5 before you take your freshmen seminar?

And do you choose when you take writing 5?

Thank you!

Hi E,

The college decides if an when you need to take english 5. The small first year booklet that you received should tell you the cut-off scores (if any) for english 5 exemption

some people take english five fall term, and first year seminar winter term.

Others take english 5 winter term and first year seminar spring term

Some people are exempt from english 5 and take FYS fall term

Others are exempt from eng 5 and take FYS winter term

I think there is a link in the dartmouth website that will tell you your status.

In the term before they take Writing 5 (if you are taking writing 5 in the fall you would find out about now), students are invited to review the sections offered and to select four in order of preference. Enrollment in one of the selected sections is highly likely.

The same thing happens with First year seminiar. When registering for the seminars, first-year students are invited to choose four seminars, ranked in order of preference. Enrollment in one of the selected sections is highly likely.

A First-Year Seminar may serve in satisfaction of specific General Education requirements, provided that the individual seminar has been approved for this purpose, and for the specific year and term, by the Committee on Instruction. Students are not eligible to participate in Off-Campus Programs until they have satisfied the First-Year Seminar requirement.

hope this helps

Thank you Sybbie--it's more than helpful, as always! :)

LOL I know, I wish there was a sybbie fairy godmother on the Tufts forum - but hey, there are current students there that are more than helpful too :-D

still...it's just...not the same, haha

Thanks a lot Sybbie! So when do we put down our preferences, during Orientation when we register for classes?

If you are logging in on the Dartmouth Class of 2009 website @

http://2009.dartmouth.edu/

If it not posted yet, you should receive notification as to whether you are scheduled for english 5 or FYS (I that last year they make their selections before the doc trips). If you are taking the class in the fall, you make your English and FYS before you go to orientation. If you are not scheduled for english 5 or FYS this term it is no big deal remember that most of the classes are capped at 15 and there are over 1000 in the class of 09.

I'm sorry, I can't seem to find where on the site it tells me when I'm scheduled for my FYS. When is the deadline for putting down your choices, I'm a little paranoid I'll miss it.

Are you sure that you are scheduled for FYS this fall.

IF you post the question on dartmouth's own 2009 site some one may be able to talk you through it (as you know I am not an 09 so I don't have access to the site). Otherwise you can contact the registrar's office and bounce the question off of them.

all the best

Thanks so much. Will do.

If anyone else is curious about the subject: I spoke to someone in the the writing program office. When the director comes back from vacation (August 22) they will mail out a letter about it. If you are exempt from Writing 5, you will take a FYS in the fall, and you will select your top 4-5 choices during orientation. They try to pick one of your top few for you.

wow, they are doing it differently this year. Just make sure that you are interested in the seminars that you are picking. SInce a lot of the FYS professors also teach a subject, take a moment to read up on them and see what other dartmouth students think of them.

Anyone know the requirements for exemption from Writing 5? Is it a 5 on the AP exam by itself? Or a 5 and a 750+ SAT score? Or does getting a 750+ SAT score lower the AP requirement?

i had a 5 and 750+ but i think i remember being assigned to writing 5...maybe i misremembered, but with my scores, i dont have to take that class?

Do you have your copy of your "first year" booklet for the class of 2009? I beleive it has the requirements for expemption from writing 5 would be there. I know that one time the school was talking about no longer giving an exemption from writing 5. I think last year's exemption was based on a 4 or 5 on one of the APs and a 770 verbal on he SAT 1

are all of the seminars offered in the fall?

by the way, the requirements for exemption from writing 5 are as follows:
5 on AP AND 700+ on SAT verbal

OR

770+ SAT Verbal.

yay!!!!!!!

First year seminars are offered all three terms and they change each term

Thanks for the links, Sybbie. You are amazingly helpful, as always.

Anyone else getting really, really excited for the next few weeks as we begin to actually put possible names to our classes? The next ten days might be the slowest of my life!
