My son and I are trying to work on course selection for his freshman year. There are so many seminar options that it is a little overwhelming. Does anyone have seminars that they would recommend? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
If this is the USEM you are asking about, I would just have him choose two or three that sound interesting. Be aware, though, that the schedule you choose won’t often mirror what your first year advisor chooses for you. I think both of my daughters ended up with three of the classes they had chosen, and both ended up making schedule adjustments once the semester began. So don’t fret too much, even if you get your schedule in August or whenever and it looks nothing like what you thought. Things really do end up working out.
Echoing what ejcclc said. After having two kids go through one of our in-state publics, I really worried about our youngest getting stuck in courses unsuited to him.
There was no need to worry. After signing himself up for a totally unsuitable schedule, his freshman advisor called and spent about an hour with him asking questions and putting him in appropriate classes. The advisor put him in Intro to Philosophy and it was perfect. Notre Dame’s advising has been outstanding so far.
I took the math usem. It was very interesting, and you don’t have to be a genius in math to get a good grade in the class. However, I would try to request a usem that will fulfill a requirement, so most likely a history, philosophy, or theology class. Because I also took two other calculus classes, the usem really didn’t fulfill any additional requirement, which I kind of regret.
