I know this may sound crazy seeing as the semester has just began, but I am a freshman and am already having a desire to transfer colleges. This desire is not new, but rather has been in my mind all summer and even during the latter half of my senior year of high school after I made my decision. There were many pressures to choose the school I ultimately chose, and I think that may be the reason I ended up here. I have researched the scholarships available at the university I desire to transfer to, and the only way I can get a substantial merit based scholarship is if I transfer this year. Without this type of scholarship I would struggle immensely to find a way to pay for this new university. I do not hate my current school, but they do not have the program I truly want and it feels like a waste of time to be studying something else, when I could be in an accelerated program for the major I would like for my future career. I was already accepted to the school I wish to transfer into but I declined their admission when I committed to the one I am currently attending. Is it a stupid decision to attempt to gain transfer admission for the spring semester? Should I wait until next year (and waste time and money)? Wait all four years? Or any other suggestions? Any help, advice, or experience with a similar situation is appreciated.
You cannot apply as a transfer student if you complete a semester at your current college. You sound like you do not really know wat you want since you made a 180 degree change over the summer. Waht makes you so certain now that your first option is your real desire?
I think that what TomSrOfBoston meant to write, was that in most cases you wouldn’t be able to apply as a freshman once you have completed a semester of college. In most cases, you would need to be a transfer applicant. However, each place sets its own policy about this so you have to ask.
Also, since you were admitted, but turned down the offer, at some places you would just need to reactivate that earlier application, and send updated information. Ask about that too.
Contact the admissions office now. Let them know that you have changed your major, and that you want to know what steps you would need to take to be considered for admission for the spring.
@happymomof1 Oops, sorry about that.
And ask about merit aid. You know…Spring admits, transfer or not, tend to get far less merit aid at schools…because most money in the merit aid coffers is given to fall admits.
If you can’t pay without merit aid…you need to also be VERY sure that money will be forthcoming before you sever your ties with the school you are at.
