Freshman, Stats 2, 20 or 21?

Hi everyone! I will be an undeclared freshman this fall at Cal, and I’m leaning towards double major in stats and econ OR Haas. Now I am in AP Stats and I think I will score a 4 or 5 on AP exam. Can someone give me any suggestions about what stats class I should take my first semester?

Here are my opinions:
Stat 2: Introduction to Statistics
Stat 20: Introduction to Statistics and Probability
Stat 21: Introduction to Statistics and Probability for Business Majors.

Any advice will help! Thanks.

Business lists Statistics 20, 21, or 25 as a prerequisite (25 appears to be no longer offered).

Economics lists Statistics 20, 21, 25, or an upper division statistics course (e.g. 131A or 134) as a prerequisite.

Note that all of the above list calculus as a prerequisite.

Neither business nor economics accepts AP statistics or Statistics 2 to fulfill prerequisites for the major (some other majors consider AP statistics to be an acceptable substitute for Statistics 2).

@ucbalumnus Thanks for your advice!

I think I will probably pick either 20 or 21 depending on my schedule. For calculus, I’ve already taken AP Calculus AB and BC, and scored 5 on AB and 4 on BC. I am definitely taking Math 1B first semester.

BTW, when do you think is the best time to take UBA10, which is

Undergraduate Business Administration 10 - Principles of Business

Should I wait till sophomore year or take it in spring 2016 and some other business related classes before applying Haas?

You should make a list of courses that you are interested in that is more than the 15-16 units that you would normally take, so that if some courses are full when you register, you have alternatives to choose. An example list of prospective courses would be:

Math 1B (or H1B if you really like math)
Economics 1
UGBA 10
Statistics 20 or 21
Reading and Composition (“A” course if you have no AP English credit, “B” course if you have a 4 in AP English, no need if you have a 5 in AP English literature)
Breadth requirement courses, such as those listed at http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirement/7breadth.html (note: business uses the same lists as L&S, but does not count business and some economics courses for breadth – see http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/breadth_list.html )
Frosh seminars like those listed at http://fss.berkeley.edu/freshman.lasso

Note that if you do not have a 5 on BC, the business major wants you to take two math courses, so if you start in Math 1B, you also need to follow it with Math 53 or 54. That should be fine since you want to also major in statistics (which requires both 53 and 54) anyway. The statistics major does require a 3.2 GPA in lower division math prerequisites and a B- or better in Statistics 134 or 135; see http://statistics.berkeley.edu/programs/undergrad/major .

OMG this is so helpful! Thanks a lot!
