Freshman Summer Internship Opportunities

Hey guys, I am an incoming freshman at Michigan State University and I'm majoring in Finance. Upon graduation I hope to land an investment banking job, but until then, I am trying to figure out how to make the most of my four years of college to set myself up best for landing that job. I am really interested in finding a summer internship after my first year of undergrad. I know they are rare, and difficult to come by, but I feel that getting an investment banking internship first year summer, or a different related internship would help me out in the long run.

I see a lot of opportunities for freshman, specifically through JP Morgan, so I was just coming to you guys for any advice on how to network, and do the best in the application process to be able to land an interview. Coming from a non target, I know my networking needs to be very effective. I do not have any direct investment banking connections, so I was curious on how I could begin to network successfully and get my desired internship.

Around when are the deadline for applying for these internship positions?
Also what are some other companies I can try and land an internship from. Are local investment banks the best way to go?

And lastly I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on my resume. I have no problem filling up my resume; but if anyone could recommend any formatting tips or any advice on what would be most relevant to put on my resume. Should I include sports accomplishments from high school? Or Clubs I started, are those relevant anymore?

Thanks to everyone who answers

Umich is a great school for I-bankers and you can easily get a internship after freshman year. I’ve been interning since my soph year of high school. Typically students from target schools who want to go into Ibanking do a Private Banking/Wealth Management Internship at a BB after their freshman year. Then do a banking internship after sophomore year, then work as a summer analyst after junior year. UMich has a lot of on campus recruiting through career services and TONS of alumni in finance you can network with through LinkedIn. You’ll be fine, PM if you have more questions on Ibanking

Since sophomore year? Wow! I’ll be a junior this fall and I was thinking of trying to find something next summer. Do you have any suggestions? I have a friend who works at Goldman Sachs, but I don’t think he’d be able to get me anything

bluecollar, your friend might not have any direct influence in getting you a job, but they certainly could provide you with information on how they got their job. And you could follow a similar path.

UMich =/= MSU
