Freshman Summer Program

YES! i got accepted! who else is going to go? i heard its for southeast asians, hispanics and african americans.

anyone? anyone attend it last year?

How do you know you got accepted? From my understanding, after AAP Scholar’s Day stuff, I think it’s open to anyone in AAP, not just those groups. I signed up for it, but I’m still waiting to here back, I guess?

I also attended AAP scholar’s Day and signed up for the freshman summer program that very day! I’m enrolled in the science intensive course and can’t wait until the July 27th, I believe that is when it starts.

^^dashgirl-it should say on the summer program section of your my.ucla.edu page
^^^mysterywiz07 thats awesome, i couldnt attend the AAP day due to transportation issues, I’m in the science intensive too!! yay im excited, do you know how we pay for orientation-which session and if it still costs 300-something dollars???/

Oh. Yeah it says I’m currently enrolled, I signed up for the science one, but don’t you have to take the placement test and stuff to get in? Everyone I talked to at Scholar’s day about this said they were in the writing one cause it’s really hard to get into the science one and they only take 80 kids. I’m guessing, since the placement test is in math, that I won’t get in. And in that case, I won’t be as excited about going…=</p>

Sapphire_ocean, I believe if your EFC number is low enough, the UCLA financial office will cover the cost for you. I am in that exact situation so I don’t have to pay for FSP. YAY. Its sad that you couldn’t come to AAP day, and I hate to break it to you but they actually paid for my plane ticket to go attend. However, it was through MECha…so I don’t know if it completely applies to you…AH! I wish someone would have posted a problem like that earlier so I could tell them that they could potentially pay for your ticket to attend! (They also provided a dorm for you to stay in! Best part of my spring break!)

^ooh thats so awesome, my FA for the FSP is still pending, should i call, it’s been over a week? and i understand about the transportation problem because i was still between cal and ucla so i didnt send the rsvp until the day before, and then found out my parents wouldnt take me to the amtrak station-umm, mysterywiz did you like ucla prior to your visit?

Actually, I never planned on attending UCLA, in reality my heart was set on UC San Diego (primarily because of their neurology department). However, when I stepped on the UCLA campus I knew I had study there, the atmosphere just really clicked with me. It is an incredible school and never really though about going there, but I have never regretted my decision. I did like the school before attending AAP, but I loved it EVEN MORE when I went, it was the best experience I had. Especially because I was able to talk to the UCLA students and about their experiences there, they really filled you in on what was going down. They were the ones that really encouraged me to take FSP in the first place.

^ wow, well i never liked ucla so i was hoping i would grow to love it, i wanted to go to berkeley but my dad was set on me going to ucla, i could have gone to usc also, [and i know i’ll get hate mail for this] but i didnt value that their academic reputation was pretty much nonexistent outside of california.

Do you guys know what the deal is for the placement exams? The one on saturday for english? I emailed the program and my mom called the office but they said to wait to get a letter in the mail…I haven’t gotten one and am waiting on email responses for the dates and times/ if it is necessary for me to take them.

Okay wow that was fast. I got an out of office email from the testing center and this is what it says:

ALL STUDENTS who will enter the University of California as freshmen must demonstrate their command of the English language by fulfilling the Entry Level Writing Requirement (formerly known as Subject A requirement). Those students from California high schools who have not satisfied the requirement by April 1, 2009, must take the Analytical Writing Placement Examination (AWPE - formerly known as Subject A Examination) on May 9, 2009, at one of the testing centers throughout the state.

Students who have been admitted to the University of California for fall 2009 and who have not met the Entry Level Writing Requirement by April 1, will receive an e-mail or letter directing them to the test center near their home or school.

Students could have satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement by either scoring:

30 or better on the ACT Combined English/Writing test; or
680 or better on the College Board SAT-II Writing Test; or
680 or better on the College Board SAT Reasoning Test, Writing section; or
3, 4 or 5 on either Advanced Placement (AP) Examination in English; or
5 or above on an International Baccalaureate High Level English A exam
6 or above on an International Baccalaureate Standard Level English A exam

During the examination, students will be required to read a passage and then write an essay responding to a single topic based on the content.
Results of the University wide Analytical Writing Placement Examination will not affect a student’s admission to the University. Those who do not pass the examination in May can still satisfy the Entry Level Writing requirement before enrolling in the University or during their first term at the University.

AWPE: Measuring Competence

THE FACULTY of the University of California intends this uniform Universitywide Analytical Writing Placement Examination procedure to publicize the standard and kind of writing competence necessary for success in the University’s introductory courses. The examinations themselves and the standards for scoring responses are developed by faculty representatives of the University’s general campuses.

This on-line version of the Universitywide Analytical Writing Placement Examination information booklet explains the process and the place of the Entry Level Writing requirement in the University curriculum and reproduces examinations administered in 1987, 1989, 1992 and 1994. It also provides the scoring guide used to evaluate the essays, as well as a set of 18 essays responding to the 1987 Examination. Comments following the essays explain why they do or do not meet the Entry Level Writing standard of competence. The University particularly encourages teachers to duplicate the Examinations and the sample essays for their students and colleagues.

If I read correctly, it’s still not answered. I mean…for fall I know I AP/SAT/ACT’ed out of it but for FSP…I don’t know.

^dashgirl have you rsvp’d yet for the math placement test? you could probably still get in because there is a precalc course and a calculus course, so go for it!

Can I leave sometimes on the weekend while attending the program[FSP] during the summer?

*I am scheduled to live on campus, but there is a show in SD I want to go see and my mom has to buy tickets now to get good seats.
k thanks =]

I’m pretty sure you can do whatever you want on the weekends, including going home/wherever. when i asked at scholar’s day someone who did it last year said you can but people usually stay to study/hang out unless they have something to go to at home or whatever.

and again with the stupid AWPE, is everyone required to take it for FSP?

^uhm if your sat scores are high enough, or you have passed an AP test in english you should be exempt… call 310-206-1571, if not you’ll have to take it @ ucla on a weekend prior to the program. I didn’t take it because I had passed my APLAC test but myucla isn’t showing my new AP scores yet[first time I requested them to be sent to ucla] so they were calling me and emailing to take the test, but I simply cannot take the trip up there, still waiting for AP scores to be received by ucla-but they know what’s up, last resort=i go up there drudgingly :(

yeah i was told that last time i called, and i know for sure they have my act and sat scores and both were high enough…they don’t have my ap scores…yet…ugh.

i guess i’ll call again tomorrow and try to find out cause i COULD take the test on the 18th but…i don’t want to. =\

i took the math one already and that was such a waste of time!
