Freshman taking Chemistry and Physics 1st semester OK?

I wondered what people with some knowledge / experience into UIUC 's Chemstry and Physics classes would think of a freshman computer engineering student taking both chemistry (102/3) and Physics 211 at the same time first semester.

When he had summer reg, my son opted to take physics 211 along with the chemistry when he could not get into another class, and now he is having second thoughts .

It is normal to take Chemistry 102/103 and Physics 211 in the same semester even though there are both hard classes. As long as your son is not taking ECE 110 and Calculus first semester, he should be fine.

Judging from my experience, I think your son will be fine. I took CHEM 202 & 203, PHYS 211 and MATH 231 (calc II), and it was definitely doable. Plus, PHYS 211 was the first physics class that I had ever taken (we didn’t have physics at my high school), and I got through it just fine while taking those other classes.

If your son is apprehensive about taking all of those classes at once, however, then he probably should take a lighter course load. I just know that I would have regretted doing that because I would have had to squeeze one of those courses into my schedule later.

yes, he is also taking math231. doable - did you get A’s or at least grades good enough to get into James scholar territory? He is also taking a philosophy 101 class first semester. Any input on phil 101? I believe it is w/ melnick.

ECE 110 will be next semester.

I had straight A’s, and I’m a James and Chancellor’s scholar. I can’t say much about PHIL 101, though - I haven’t taken it. If your son is looking for an easy class, I would recommend RLST 104, Asian Mythology. It was one of the easiest classes I’ve taken, and it was interesting (at least to me).

this comment said taking BOTH might be difficult. Did you mean either? As I said, he is taking calc 1st semester, too. ece110 2nd semester.

ECE110 is going to take up most of your son’s time by far. As for Calc/Phys/Chem, did your son take any of these classes in highschool? My high school had a great physics/chemistry teacher and I found the first year classes at the U of I to be a breeze, and first level calculus was mostly review as well.

Your son should be fine then. He would have trouble taking Chemistry, Physics, Calculus, and ECE 110 all in the same semester.
