Hello CC,
If all goes well, with AP credits, CC credits and taking 16 units a quarter i will have exactly 91 units. So I was wondering if I wanted to try transferring out of my UC after 1 year to a different UC (I know the chances are extremely slim) when do I start applying? I figured it would be November 1st but by that time I will be statless, no grades no extra curriculars, nothing to show off to colleges besides the few clubs I will join and my first quarter schedule. What will I put in my application? Should I even bother? Anybody with any transfer experience at all help me out with this?. I am perfectly content with UCR for 3-4 years before grad school but the chance to go to UCSB or UCD would be great. Thank you all, criticisms are welcome.

You can do it in 1 year. And the chances are not slim.

Many people have pulled of 1 year UC-UC transfers, including myself. You apply during the regular cycle of Nov 1 - Nov 30. You will have no UCR grades at the time the app is due but you will still have all the extra-curricular and volunteer activities you’ve done since the beginning of high school, 2 personal statements and any grades from any college courses you took before the Fall.

After you turn in the application, you will send an update in January with your Fall grades. You can then optionally send your Winter grades when they come out in March (I did do this).

Since they are going to have little information on you, you should get the best grades possible in the Fall and Winter quarters (as close to a 4.0 as possible). You should also have all your pre-requisite courses done by the end of the Spring quarter. And, if you can, finish all your UCR GE courses by the end of the Spring quarter (maybe Summer? not sure how it works with SB and Davis). Finishing your GE’s isn’t that big of a deal though.

One thing though: don’t sacrifice your grades to try and pull this off. If you feel you can’t do it and need to take less courses, they just take a second year to transfer. But you say you need to take only 16 units a quarter to do this so it shouldn’t be that hard.

FYI - this is how my UC → UCLA 1 year transfer played out:

AP: 28 Units
Fall: 16 Units (4.0 gpa) (Sent these)
Winter: 21 Units (4.0 gpa) (Sent these)
Spring: 30 Units (3.95 gpa)
GE requirements and Pre-Reqs completed (to do this I made sure every class overlapped to complete multiple requirements)

Good luck!
