Hi. I'm very confused right now and in a dilemma, whether to apply as a transfer or a freshman. I'm an international student. Enrolled into a college at my place. I've done my first semester here and got GPA 3.88. I took SAT and the score is only 1590.

I'm in Semester 2 and will be completing 3 semesters here and wish to enroll in Fall 2013.

So should I apply as a transfer or a freshman?

Each college and university sets its own policy about who is and who isn’t a transfer applicant. You need to contact each of the places on your list, and ask them which status they require that you apply in. If you will have completed a full year of college before you enroll, it is most likely that you will be considered a transfer applicant.

If you will have completed a full academic year (2 semesters or 3 quarters) of post-HS college by Fall 2013, you will be considered a transfer applicant at ALL US colleges. Remember it’s the amount of college completed when you enroll in the new school, not when you apply that matters.

Most colleges state eligibility requirements clearly on their Admissions websites.

You probably cannot apply as a freshman. You are required to send your transcripts from your current university. If you complete a full year if study there, it is almost certain that every place you apply to here will consider you a transfer applicant. If you do not complete a full year, some might consider you a freshman. That is why you need to ask each one separately.

Colleges have policies defining who is a fr or a transfer applicant. How you apply depends on the definition used by the school, not by what you want to do.

Whenever you apply to a college you will be required to send transcripts from all colleges that you previously attended.

What entomom said. the only way some schools might let you not apply as a transfer is if you don’t complete a full year of coursework… this will still probably require you to get in contact with the admissions office for help on what to do. good luck.
