I wish I'd known that if I want help picking a major, I should go to career services. Not my adviser.

reynolc

The Morehead selection process is about identifying and seeking individuals with passion in some area, so make sure if you are using an essay from another school app that it really fits the question and doesn't come off looking like you tried to "make it fit the question"....does that make sense?

Pannaga, you can double major and minor, or Major and double minor. It really depends on what you are studying. I'm thinking about majoring in Biology and History, which is surprisingly doable even though a lot of the classes do not overlap. Certain subjects, I think Physics and Music most of all, from what I've heard, are hard to double major in, unless a lot of the courses overlap. I'm not really sure about psychology and art. I hope that helped.

Carly,
Just one thing to keep in mind is that for breaks, the campus can become a bit of a ghost town. I'm OOS, and over Labor Day Weekend, everyone was gone. However, the rumors about every in-stater going home every weekend are blown way out of proportion.

To elaborate/expand on the comment by packerfan; Labor Day is a bit different from normal weekends. Many OOS students with cars or who have friends with cars also often leave that weekend. The beach is two hours away and the mountains about two and a half. I know that once he had a car there, my son often took weekends at the beach and other places.

UNC is definitely NOT a commuter school or a place that is deserted on weekends. Most campuses (outside of home football game weekends) look pretty deserted on Saturdays and Sundays, even big schools. If you don't have to be up, most people sleep in and if there isn't a reason to be somewhere many people lay low and stay in their dorms during the day doing laundry, resting, catching up etc.

i'm also a freshman at unc this year. and i have a question of whether i should take engl 102 or engl 102i next semester. I mean, i want one that has less work than the other. thanks

Hey, thanks for answering questions =)
Ok so everything about the actual school fits me- size, major, etc, I'm wayy into sports, and it's onl like 6 hrs from home (NJ). Buttt...

Even though it is close distance wise, do you think it would be hard to fit in down there? I mean I know it's a nice area, but living in a suburb half an hour from NY I'm scared it'll be way too out of my comfort zone
and

I'm Jewish, not orthodox or anything close to that, but I atleast don't want anywhere that's like completely antisemetic.

mterry - I'm from Long Island so I feel ya. It is DEFINITELY more than 6 hours though. It's gotta be at least 8 or 9.

It won't be too hard to fit in down here. Hillel is pretty active and there's even a few Jewish frats/sororities if you're into that. Sometimes it can be kind of weird, like when you meet people with strong southern accents or go to the State Fair (I literally experienced culture shock) but it's fun to share your culture and learn other cultures and stuff.

Great thanks! (trust me, I don't exactly have a desire to stay in NJ either lol need some new surroundings!)

I really like UNC but unfortunately it doesn't have neuroscience; is the cognitive science major pretty much the same as what I'm looking for or is it a fair amount off?

Packerfan I think you're really exaggerating a little bit in calling UNC a ghost town on weekends. Labor day is different because people either go home or do something outside of UNC but that is ONE weekend. Even then I wouldn't say the school is a ghost town; it's pretty obvious that you haven't ever seen a real suitcase college where kids do go home every weekend because there is always something to do on the weekends here and the majority of people stay.

While the campus quiets down a bit on the weekends, I can honestly say that I am almost nearly as busy on weekends as on the weekdays... I only went home for part of Labor Day weekend and Fall Break, and was more bored at home than I have ever been on campus.

jwlstn,
I said that rumors that UNC was like that (empty on weekends) were blown way out of proportion. By breaks, I meant things like Labor Day weekend and fall break. I definitely would not say that UNC is a ghost town on other weekends. There is definitely a lot going on the weekends. And eadad was right, Labor Day weekend is an exception, not the rule. Sorry for any confusion I caused.

From what I heard, UNC was pretty deserted during fall break. You just have to plan ahead and have someone visit you, go to a friend's home, or get together with some people who did stay on campus. Definitely a good time to catch up on school work - or sleep!

yeah, sorry about that packerfan. If you look I think that I wrote that comment at some ungodly, early hour so that explains my confusion.

A lot of people take Fall Break as an opportunity to travel with their friends. That's what me and most people I know did.

Fall Break was really bad for me. I was literally one of the 5 in Hinton James that had to stay.

Wow cloying that's exactly what I did too, what a coincidence!

;)

danny hows UNC going for u so far...knowing ur OOS transfer and from MIami im really curious since that"ll b the same case for me

Also how strict are they on changing majors?
and how they really strict on graduating students in 4 years?

How much time do u have left at UNC danny..n how many credits did u transfer in?

Hey Gator2008,
I think I remember you from previous posts.
I like UNC. It has it's greats(i.e. academics are strong and enriching, campus is magnificent, fun during the weekends) Also it has its downs( i.e. bus system during the day is just aweful, lots of people that you will meet already know each other because they are N.C residents, first year housing is nothing compared to your cozy room). Nevertheless, it is a great school where you can find and do anything that you would like to do.
Are you from Miami? You should be working on the college application and retouch your essays if you haven't. It is quite hard for an OOS to get in. And it is getting harder and harder every year because Chancellor Thorp is trying to attract even more "elite and studious" students just like the other top-notch public schools(UMich, UVA) and even the Ivy's.
I am not quite sure as to how they are when a student changes majors. Nevertheless, they don't recommend you changing majors. I would recommend you to take various classes to get a feel of what you like. Keep in mind that you can take as many or as little classes as you wish because your tuition is based on 12 credits. One exception is that you must have a minimum of 12 credits each semester and a max of 18.
There is a rise in what is called a "super senior" here in UNC. Apparently, a handful of students are graduating in 5 years instead of 4 years. UNC has put this issue in the spotlight just recently and will enforce everyone to start graduating in 4 years, the intended amount of years until graduation. So, yes, they are strict on that.
As of now, I came with 44 credits to UNC. And I am taking 13 credits this semester, so starting in spring I will be 3 credits shy of being a junior. But I don't want to fast-forward my track here at UNC because I have a tons of major-related classes I have to take before Med school. And I don't picture myself taking the MCAT within a year. So, I do not know how much time I have left at UNC. Remember, that once you get to college, it is a memorable time in your life that time itself shouldn't be an issue. Make it memorable. Enjoy every day of it.
Hope this helps and if you need any help on your application, I would be glad to help you.
-Danny
