I'm not denying that CGS stduents are the butt end of many jokes. They are. I'd know. I make some of them, myself. According to two professors I have spoken with, the vast majority of junior CGS students are at or above average. That's all I know.

Students outside of the CGS community do tend to make jokes at the General Studies program..but that's just college kids for you... in the end it really doesn't matter, because after the 2 year program to transfer into any of the other colleges is really easy; for example to get into Sargent you need to have a minimum GPA of about 2.7. In most of the other colleges, especially in your freshman year there are core requirements/pre-requisites; such as CAS there is a language requirement or many 101 courses depending on your major. All freshman take part in a writing program as well, so that is pretty much unavoidable whether you do it at CGS or SMG. In the spring semester of freshman year you do get do pick an elective; so you can meet with your advisor and find the one that will count towards your major and keep up with the students who are on the same track at other colleges.

My D got in to Sargent ED last year with similar stats (about the same GPA and SATs were about 1230). So it's not cut and dried that she'd only get into CGS.

You really shouldn't worry about choosing CGS until you get your letter in the mail. You might not get in at all, or you might get in to the college you applied to. When you get the letters in the mail and you've visited all the schools and know what you want out of college, then you should see if CGS is worth it.

Im interested in the communications field but I dont know how hard it is to get accepted - Im still a junior but Im quite worried since my GPA is not all that up there. its like .. 3.2? its pretty low.
my current SAT score is around a 1980, and Im hoping to get a 2100. I was wondering what kind of stats people have for communications (journalism).

Also, it kind of irks me that its very expensive, more expensive than NYU and yea.. my parents have a rather high income salary so I dont think I qualify for financial aid, but who knows. How is the financial aid?

I'm in COM...its a great school to be in. The programs for journalism are top notch. I'm not a journalism major but I know a bunch of them. I don't know the new SAT score conversion, but a 3.2 really isn't that low. It should be good enough, and plus you're only a junior so you have 2 years to bring it back up.

As far as I know, NYU isn't cheaper than BU. BU is like 44K and NYU is like 47K, plus depending on the school you're in there are extra fees. Someone I know just spent 53K for 1 year there. I personally don't have any financial aid, but just about everyone I know does. They're definitely more generous than NYU. Just apply and see how it goes. Good luck!

HUH?! Sorry I was just reading this... well isn't COM currently the #1 communications school in the country (Northwestern 2nd.. and some other school and Syracuse (New House) that battle for 3rd and 4th). A 3.2 GPA is like an 83/84.. I wanted to go straight into COM and I have a 3.62 unweighted (a 92) and a 2020 on my SAT with excellent recs, very good activities, etc. My GC (I'll give you a hint, I go to the best school in NY) even recommended me that I apply to CAS first because COM is so top notch and they want the top 5% from each school and even with my school's connects and rankings, it would be iffy because it is the #1 school in the nation lol.

Ohh...I thought it was #2 to Northwestern... but it changes all the time so that's awesome that it's #1. But beyond SATs and GPA, I would assume that COM looks more at your activities and writing ability than CAS and some of the other schools. They REALLY stress them imprtance of writing in COM, so I can't imagine them not taking the essays seriously. I know that some people apply to CAS and then switch over before school starts, but if you apply to CAS and don't get in then you'll always be wondering whether you would have gotten into COM.

And thanks for all that info about COM. I really should know all that stuff since I'm in it lol. Where did you find that? I'm always looking for rankings and I can never find ones for communications.

You're right, it is impossible to find lol. A good friend of mine goes to Northwestern and studies communications and called me screaming about how he is currently #2 and not #1, my GC told me the same thing. I have NO CLUE where to find the rankings at all, I guess if you were interested ask the Admissions Office lol.

Historically, Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism and Missouri are considered the top j-schools. USC, Syracuse, and North Carolina are right up there too. BU's com school is excellent, but nationally it's not considered in the same group as those schools.

BU isn't considered in the same group for JOURNALISM... not all of COM. I'm not sure exactly what the deal is but the way it was explained to me was that the people in charge of deciding the curriculum didn't want to follow the strict rules of some journalism board. So now our journalism program isn't "accredited" to a certain group. I was told it gives more freedom to the students to take more classes in different areas and do different things, but I'm not a journalism major so I honestly don't know that much about it.

what do you know about the trustee scholarship program? do the trustee scholars mingle a lot with the rest of the school, or is it just the same 30 people hanging out alone?

ROFL then look it up and google it and check the rankings. I don't know where you've been for the past decade then. Especially considering we had an a horrible accident occur and we were in the newspaper two weeks ago where a classmate died in a tragedy.. so that strikes me as odd that you didn't hear of it. Unless you don't keep up with the news.

14 with public and private.. #3 public nationally.. (all the * represent private schools) thus and therefore if you look at the locations.. the first public school iin New York is Jericho HS.

I see you're really proud to be a student at your high school. I think where you may be from, it is famous and well known, but where I am from (NYC) it is not well known. I think it is a little overboard to be saying things like "I don't know where you've been for the past decade then." and "Unless you don't keep up with the news."

Thank you for informing me of my ignorance anyway.

I wasn't referring to the rankings, I was referring to the terrible accident that happened three weeks ago.. you should be happy you didn't hear about it, I am just surprised because it was in the paper/broadcasted in the news.. but yeah it would make you sick to your stomach.
