Freshman worried about future goal

Hi! I am a freshman and i have been to 3 colleges because of my jobs and family. However i now go to ONLY ONE CA College called Santa Monica. So far I have 2 W's, 2 C's, and 2 B's all together. If i begin studying better than I do, can i still go to graduate and thengo to medical school to the following: UCLA,UCSD, or UC Berkeley?

Although all answers are welcome, i would like to know if any has been thru this and now goes to one of these schools

PLEASE BE HONEST AND DONT LIE

Grazie :)

those are terrible grades for someone in pre-med

you should look at academic renewal and start getting good grades in IGETC and Major requirements to transfer… UCSD is relatively easy to get into when compared to UCLA and Berkeley. I think they have a TAG for students above a 2.8/3.0 w/ 30+ units.

medical schools usually require: 1 year gen chem (w/ lab), 1 year Bio (w/ lab), 1 year physics (w/ lab), 1 semester/2 quarters organic chem (w/ lab), and some other english and humanities…depending on where you apply the courses will vary

you asked: “can i still go to graduate and thengo to medical school to the following: UCLA,UCSD, or UC Berkeley?”

Grazie…anything is possible, work hard and take the required classes and I’m sure you’ll be fine :)

HEY thanx for ur honest anwser and um so UCSD would give me a chance with at least a 3.5 GPA and a tag sheet?

The most important thing in transferring is your grades. If you’re sacrificing grades over units per semester because of other responsibilities(such as family and jobs) you should really consider your strategy. The most MOST important thing in transferring to a UCLA UCB etc is your gpa, which means you should always aim at having the highest gpa possible in transferable courses, which COULD mean to take less units per semester, even if it means only going part time to school. Your outside responsibilities won’t justify poor grades especially when they’re comparing you to those who are close to a 3.6+ gpa.

agreed. for transfers, they pretty much only look at GPA and major pre-reqs. if you bring up your grades, you have a good chance at UCSD. you have a slim shot at UCLA and berkeley though. but it really does depend on how much you raise your grades.

good luck with everything!

were any of those classes pre reqs or premed requirements? You sure are making it tough on yourself with those grades but its not impossible. Read this: http://career.berkeley.edu/article/051014a-hh.stm</a> However, note that the bad grades in the article were at UC Berkeley, not at a community college. If you’re getting B’s and C’s at a community college you’re going to get absolutely murdered at Berkeley/LA/SD if you somehow got in with those grades. You need to shape up quickly.

I think you can only do academic renewal once so be sure you’re ready to focus on school 100% and earn As after it is granted. def consider ucs with a transfer guarantee program. here’s a list [Transfer Admission Guarantees](<a href=“Understanding UC transfer | UC Admissions”>Understanding UC transfer | UC Admissions)

The C’s pretty much kill your grades. How did you do at the other CC’s? The UC’s will have to look at all the grades, even from your previous colleges. I go to SMC also, and this is the TAG for UCSD:

UC San Diego - “TAG” (Transfer Admission Guarantee)

Participants must complete a UCSD TAG specific contract, complete 60 transferable semester units with a grade point average (GPA) of 2.8. (12 transferable semester units must be completed at the time the contract is written).

Participants must follow a unique general education curriculum, called the TAG GE Core Requirements.

This program allows students to transfer in Fall, Winter, or Spring quarter. Contract deadlines are September 30th for Fall, May 31st for Winter, and August 31st for Spring.

International students and former UC students (who left in unsatisfactory standing) are not eligible.

Go to your counselor and he/she will tell you what the GE Core requirement classes are. If community college classes are hurting you enough to get C’s, I think you should follow a different profession. Upper division bio and chem classes are killer.

Call (310) 434-4210 to see a counselor to complete a contract.

There’s no “what ifs” and nobody can be certain whether you can get in or not. Especially since you are asking a question based on an assumption that you WILL begin to study harder and do better.

Not trying to offend you or anything but why don’t you start working harder, (Not saying that you do not already, if you do) improve your grades, write an excellent essay explaining what happened, and have stellar ECs before you start asking about your chances?

When I was in HS, I was just like you, had bad grades and constantly asking others “what if I do better this year . . . what if I do better next year . . .” And guess what? I never did any better. I’m not saying you’re like me, but what motivated me to do better was not in believing that I had a chance to get into my dream school with my poor stats, what motivated me was a constant fear that I won’t get into my dream school. I’m not sure if I’m making much sense, but I guess what I’m trying to say is just try your best and don’t ask hypothetical questions.

Those are some bad grades. Depending on which classes you received those grades in, it might really hurt your chances ex. prereq courses. Boost your GPA immediatly because premed at the schools you are applying to are tough to receive admission from, especially UCLA.

thanx…but um wouldnt med school interviewees start questioning me y i took so long at a cc to get my pre-requiestes done?

thank u… im syudying my ass off for human bio cuz that would be my major at UCSD

thanx for the article… well the C’s came from English(which i am re-taking this class at another college and kwow i can raise it to a B althought the C will not be erased from my record) and the other was from Poly sci…i am taking my first science class called Human Bio and i am studying everyday b/c i want to major in Human Bio at UCSD…do u think its ok that the C’s came from non-pre requistes?

hey thanx…well i planned evrything out and i might transfer to UCSD in 2010 or mayb 2011 b/c i have to reach calc and UCSD wants their transfers to complete as much undergrad before transfering

hi! well like i said i got 2 C’s from eng 21A (LACC) and poly sci.i only have one C in SMC but obviously the commitee will see my record…my science area is strong, its just the non math and non science courses that get to me u know?
i am now retaking eng and i know this semester i can raise my grades to pure A’s and B’s, but what scares me is my previous record…I at least want to go to UCSD

Hey alisson god bless u and thanx for the honesty…no really thanx…and ur right! i wasnt working too hard …U make perfect sense! :0
what are EC’s ? (sorry)
and well everyday i’ve been studying hard for math and human bio class and my other 2.
do u have any suggestions? i would appreciate it! ur honesty was great!

hey make bank…well they were from english and poly sci… this semester i am taking a course called Human bio and do u think the committee at any of these schools would care if i got a A since it isnt part of the pre requiest?
