freshman writing seminars

do any upperclassmen have advice about the best/worst writing seminars? which ones are easiest? which ones should we stay away from? any comments will be greatly appreciated

yea i have that question too, which is the easiest for people who hate writing and are terrible at it becuase they hate it?

im confused about the freshman writing seminars too. so if we got a 4 or better on AP english lit or lang, we get to skip out of 1 of the 2 seminars?
Where are the choices for the writing seminars (webpage?)
When do we sign up for them?

i know that architecture students only have to take 1 writing seminar! BOOYAAAAAAA

Whether or not you get credit for FWS depends on your college. I am in engineering and to get out of 1 you have to have a 5 on AP Language or Literature. About the ease of FWS, if you really don't like literature or writing, definitely do not take ENG 270: Reading of Fiction. I steered clear of any English dept. ones or Comp. Lit. ones and had a pretty good experience. The best way to select them is to figure out your schedule, and see which ones fit into it and what sounds interesting to you. Word of warning: some of the coolest sounding ones can turn out to be really lame.

From my understanding/experience (and I think it's still the same), you need a 5 on your AP to knock out a FWS unless you're in ILR or Ag - in which a 4 will also knock one out.
And my theory is that the cooler it sounds, the more work it will be- and the more boring, the less work. My topic was quite boring, but we only had a few papers. My friend took 'Fairy Tales', and had a 'mini-paper' due for every class. My best advice: Carefully read through the description and think about the types of things you'll have to write about when making your decision.

also, check out the books that they will be using. This might give you a better idea of what you will be doing in the class. Go to http://store.cornell.edu/faculty.html and click on textbook verification. For seminars w/ more than one section, the books are different for each section usually.

btw, I took reading of fiction (engl 270) and had a great experience.

what is freshman writing seminar graded based on? besides the papers.

if youre in CAS, no matter how many english AP 5's you have, you can only place out of ONE seminar. i recommend cultural studies, because i love contemporary culture. just take something youre into.
