Hi everyone
Can anyone explain to me the year abroad program as a freshman for OOS students? It is something that is interesting. But I need to know the ramifications on the student.

DD wants to get into the Athletic Training program…so she has classes that she must take her freshman year in order to apply and be accepted for her Soph year.

Can these classes be taken abroad? Would I need to talk to the Semester Abroad department or the AT Director?

How does this affect Greek Rushing? Yah, it is really important to DD. Does going abroad for freshman year just move everything back a year? Rush, classes, etc?

DD wants to minor in Spanish and we thought that this might be a good way to get it finished and to lower our costs.

She is working hard at getting her ACT up and is only 1 point away from a 30, which would make a huge difference in our ability to have her attend Alabama.

Anyone have any input on the Freshman Year Abroad program for me? Pluses? Minus?

I’ve never heard of the Frosh year abroad. Is there a link for that?

I can’t imagine that Rush would work out…I’ve never heard of pledging being delayed a year. She’d probably have to Rush as a soph, which some don’t think is advisable.

???

How does going abroad frosh year lower your costs? Why not go abroad a later year?

Have your D also take the SAT…it’s often easier to get the 1330 M+CR on the SAT then to get a 30 ACT.

I read a post on this forum about it. It was written by a mom who I had seen post before and it talked about how freshman who did the program and were OOS received in state tuition for the next three years.

I swear I am not crazy! I just tried to search the Alabama site, but I can’t find it there. Hoping she see’s it and posts. It was an interesting concept.

It lowers your costs only if you are an OOS student…once completed you get instate. That is a nice savings.

I am thinking the only way it would work with recruitment is if your D participated as a sophomore. I know that my sorority would be hesitant to bid a girl who would miss all the pledge meting and would not be there for initiation. Recruitment is competitive enough but gotta tell you it is harder as a sophomore…something to think about.
