Freshman Year Check In

There was a suggestion a while back when my D audtioned to make hotel reservations for move in weekend as soon as possible-which I thought was a great idea. One thing I didn't consider was reservations for performance weekends. My D is not at a school with a "Big 10 Football Team", but is in a city with one. I just tried to make reservations for her first performance and besides barely finding a room it was triple in price than a normal weekend with a 2 night stay minimum. Luckily, I can go the following weekend since there is not a football game. I guess when the show schedule comes out for next year I will make reservations early just in case and then cancel if I don't need them.

I will also second that suggestion but in terms of finding tickets for their performances. I am already closed out of getting a ticket for Ragtime at Tisch in October If anyone has an extra, I will gladly buy it!

Can’t help with Tisch tickets, but I have sometimes found lodging during busy times at Air BNB:

Me too, lightingmom. Me too!!! (I have bookmarked their box-office website, so hopefully I’ll get tickets to the next one)

@lighting and BigCity, it was war out there to get those Ragtime tickets. I was sitting at my computer the nanosecond they went on sale and every date I clicked kept saying “unavailable” even though it looked like they were. Dates disappeared off of the shelf in front of my eyes like a Cabbage Patch Kid doll in '83. It just so happens that I’ll be in NYC from the west coast during the run and well, being able to go to anything is so rare for me. So I hit refresh a zillion times until finally… I got them. Note to self for all future Tisch Stageworks shows, you’ve got to go in prepared to fight to the finish :). Fortunately a friend that I made here in CC had warned me and I went in prepared for battle.

Congrats on snagging those tickets, halflokum. And the Cabbage Patch joke just killed me! Gosh, I love those freaky dolls.

Had to fly in for this one – only because my kid is in the show and I knew how difficult it would be to get tickets. Industry folks, devoted family and interested fans would have a difficult time. The Abe Barrows Theatre is a relatively small venue, making it so tough to get Tisch Stageworks tickets. It’s frustrating. I guess NYU wants to keep the performances small and personal? Wish more people could see the show. So excited, personally. Musically directed by the esteemed Alexander Gemignani and his equally talented wife, Erin Ortman, directing the show. Wow. Wish everyone could see it. Someday – after my senior DS has moved on – I do hope Tisch can figure out a better way. Best to All.

^^^Oh hello. Here is the friend that warned me! Can’t wait to see the show and I agree, there should be a better way.

Thanks for the warning! My D just started at Tisch this year, so I have no knowledge about the venues they use. I am a little surprised to hear that theater is that small, especially if the demand is high to see the productions. I will definitely keep that in mind for the future shows.

In most theatres, there is a custom of giving each cast member a couple of “comps”, free tickets they can give to anyone they like. Don’t most colleges do this as well?

Years ago, when we were first planning to visit Tisch, a knowledgeable person on CC warned me that it is generally very hard to get tickets to Tisch shows.

Good question about the comp tickets, KEVP. You’d think family members could get them. We certainly could when my son was in productions at BU.

Tisch indeed does offer comp tickets to cast members, although there is no guarantee of a particular performance. (My son selected three dates and we were flexible to taking any of them. Fortunately, we are in easy distance of NYC.) They also offer a special “hotline” for agents and managers of the cast, if you happen to have one. Even with the comp tickets we have in hand, it was difficult to purchase tickets for RAGTIME on an alternate date and time for a small group we wanted very much to attend the show. I believe the kids do some swapping of tickets among themselves though – but for the general public, it’s a challenge to score tickets. Just a fact.

Thanks to everyone about the ticket issue- I was completely blindsided by this one and your feedback has helped enormously, as always! I will be perched at my co outer like a crazed hawk next time! And Halflokum, you are truly hilarious and a great writer!
