freshman year classes

I just had some questions about classes and scheduling and what not. I'm in CAS for first semester (hoping to transfer to ILR second semester if possible) and I heard that we were supposed to sign up for a tentative list of classes in july. I won't be in the country and I most likely won't have internet access, so I just wanted to get a head start. What does it mean when the same class is offered SEM 101, SEM 102.....to SEM 105 with different times. I'm thinking about taking CHIN 1109 since i really want to learn how to read and write chinese so can I take any of them? (sry if it's a dumb question, im not really sure what i'm looking at)

I'm also thinking about PSYCH 1101 with the seminar. A freshman writing seminar, and other classes that could possibly help with the transfer if it is allowed. Any ideas and suggestions would be great.

p.s. also wondering, do I have to take a math and science first semseter? at my high school we usually had to do one course in every department so I was just wondering how it works at cornell. math and science really aren't my strong points so I wanted to avoid it as best as possible lol.

SEM 101, 102, etc. is just for identification purposes (SEM = seminar, btw)…dont worry about the numbers and just pick the time that’s right for you

you dont have to take math or science first semester if you dont want…just dont forget about distribution reqs and whatnot, though

hey tmk39, Im trying to do a double major so if i hope to graduate in 4 years, I might not have any room for spare classes. If this is the case, can i talk to an advisor of some sort before picking my classes? Is there a number i can call or do i just have a meeting assigned automatically.

Thanks.

@jocer333:
even if you do do a double major, you’ll most likely still have room for other classes/electives. i’m doing a bio and psych double major and am still taking electives not related to the majors. you’ll also have to take other classes anyway to fulfill distribution and other requirements.

im not sure what college youre in, but i know for arts (and probably all the other colleges as well, but im not sure), you’ll be assigned an advisor. (you should know your advisor before registration.) you can probably e-mail them or set up a meeting if you wish to discuss classes.
