Freshman Year GPA is KILLING ME!!

Hey everyone.

I just would just like to know your opinion on how much consideration college admission boards put into freshman year GPA.

I had a GPA of 2.75 freshman year. But since then I have steadily brought it up to a 3.7 but it could be higher.

I wasn't really that focused freshman year and kind of just blew it off.

I have read that many colleges like to see an upward trend in GPA. Is that true for the most part? What else can you tell me?

THanks

dont aim for the ivy league.

Congrats! You just found the topic of your application essay for school / scholarships! :)

They will look at your cummulative GPA; if your frosh year GPA is really lower than the next three years than you could use the essay to explain how much more mature / growth you've gotten / recieved, etc.

Yes, many colleges like to see an upward trend in GPA (except IVY's and top LAC...b/c of their selectivity...)

Keep working hard. Try taking AP/honor courses (don't overload) and let the college know that you are taking school more seriously.

Chao

WOW....im impressed...how did you bring up a 2.75 gpa to a 3.7... did u get 4.0s soph and junior or wat....and even if u did get sraightd 4.0's it still equals out to 3.58...idk w.e but to accomplish that is impressive if ur not lying.

First of all who said I was shooting for Ivy league schools?

Second, no I'm not lying. Freshman year I had 2.75 for both sems (we have 8 classes a year/4 per semester each like 1 1/2 hours long. Then a 4.25 last year and right now I have a 4.25. So thats 3.7. The honors classes are weighted +.5 so it works out. I tried EXTREMELY hard this past semester and last year for those grades to pull up my gpa.

It's a lot harder to get it higher now unless I get the same or better than that for this semester and next year.

I know my gpa is pretty good now it's just the fresh year loooks bad and Im ****ed cause its just because I didnt try.

Anyway, thanks for the replies. I just wanted some other opinions.

You could try applying to schools that don't look at freshman year grades.

Schools like Stanford and Princeton say they will ignore the freshman year entirely, and schools like Hopkins say it is weighted lower then all other years. Frankly, I don't see why a bad first year (I'm in this boat) would make you any less comparable to the 4.0+ 4 years straight. All it shows is that the kid was aggressive and ready for high school off the bat. Most people don't remember what they learned freshman year, and a 14 year old is much different then a 18 year old.

didn't the OP say he wasn't applying to Ivy League?

Hm, get a good SAT score and you're set.

oooo my bad...i didnt know you were talking about weighted...sry
