Freshman Year GPA

Pretty simple question, how important is the Freshman GPA to graduate school admissions? Especially if it was less than stellar?

There's not a simple answer to that question, obviously.

GPA is not the only factor considered in graduate admissions, and people with less-than-stellar freshman performances get into top graduate programs. Still, all things considered, it's good to have a high GPA when applying to grad school.

It depends what type of program as well, obviously.

Sounds like you've already had a less than stellar freshman yr. Don't worry though, just keep your GPA up from this point on. I've known many people with not so great freshman GPA get into top graduate programs.

A few more questions:

Do colleges look at honors courses as better? How about if you don't do as well?

When applying to graduate school, what do they really look at, and how important are the respective sections? I mean, I'm planning on doing lots of research, just because it really interests me, but man, this quarter is going pretty roughly, at least compared to what I'm used to in high school, and I hope it doesn't pull me down in the long run. Thoughts? Thanks for the time, by the way.

Many people, including myself, received their worst grades during their freshman year. I sure wasn't ready for the change from the joke that was high school to a rigorous engineering education. I'm sure adcoms understand that freshman year is a transition period. Just try and not blow it too bad this year, learn how the system works, find out what is expected of you, and perform to your full potential in the subsequent semesters.

By this logic, for those who went through a five year program, is sophmore year open for missteps, too? = )

Honestly, there's no single thing that's going to completely derail your application from being accepted to graduate school.

But you do want as many positives and as few negatives on your application as possible. Yes, you can get a bad grade freshman year. Yes, you can get a weak GRE math score. Yes, you can [insert situation here]. But you can't do them all at the same time.
