freshman year grades

hey how important are your high school freshman year grades? i got a 2.86 and a 3.6... and i'm looking for the top 3 uc's and some private schools.. do you know any private schools the top ones that dont include freshman year or don't generally examine it deeply? do i still have a chance at them? i've improved dramatically every semester and a 4.7 junior yr... ec's are wayy above average:
7 clubs
Eagle scout
Varsity tennis
jazz band orchestra
Dance
400 hrs comm service and eagle scout project
much more...
my cumulative for privates might be around 3.95... is that still good enough? Have i failed in life or should i still apply to the privates!?

which ones dont examine freshman yr closely!

Many top 25's either don't look at it or discount it heavily. Definitely APPLY!

Schools that don't even look at Freshmen grades:
UCLA
Umich (not sure)
Carnegie Mellon
UC Berkeley

ya my top choice is ucla beacuse its in LA but i wanna be a lawyer and i hav eto graduate from the top 25 schools to get into DECENT law school.. so i know the uc's dont look at freshman yr which is good but just in case i wanna aim for some privates just so i can get into a law school not nearly as hard as if i was in a uc... i wanna make like 150 grand as a lawyer first yr... my moms friend is the dean at yale law school so i dunno... easy money! what other schools tho? hmm carnegie mellon... lemme see how good that school is!

stanford and princeton

"ya my top choice is ucla beacuse its in LA but i wanna be a lawyer and i hav eto graduate from the top 25 schools to get into DECENT law school.. "

that's not true at all, as long as you have a good LSAT score and a high gpa you will most likely be accepted to a good law school.

thanks bob n drew

what about 8th grades on transcript?

yeah, you don't need to go to an elite school to go to elite law schools, it's just that many of the kids at elite schools are already extremely smart, so they get into better schools. I wouldn't say just go to a crappy school to keep your gpa up. Go to a school that you like, where you'll be challenged, and study something that you enjoy. The type of school you go to is taken into account, so if you have great grades from a low tier school, but have a relatively low lsat, that might hurt you.

ok so what do lawyers major in for undergrad? econ, history, poly sci? and what schools are good for these? i'll aim for those schools

thanks drew i was scared if i went to davis... not even mcdonals would hire me . : ) but seems that some davis guys went to standford law school. they must have had like 3.9 and plus g.p.a's

According to UofM Law Schools website:

The majors perennially most common in our entering classes are political science, history, economics, English, psychology, and philosophy; some atypical majors that we think provide particularly good training for law school are computer science, mathematics, engineering, and hard sciences, which disciplines make up about 20 percent of the class; classics, seen relatively rarely, is also an excellent foundation for legal study.

mathematics for law school??? wow drew your really helpful : ) thanks man.. out of those majors which do you think would be the easiest.. i was thinkin u.s history

which other schools don't look at freshman yr?

I doubt they will take the high school classes you took in 8th grade into consideration.

8th grade? that was middle school...

Yea, someone asked about 8th grade. Like algebra I or Spanish I in 8th grade.

I don't think those count. its just courses in high school... i was wondering ow much freshman year counts in high school and which colleges throw away these grades.
