My first semester my freshman year I completely slacked off and ended up with a 2.67 GPA with no honors classes. The next three semesters of my Freshman and Sophomore year I had a 3.6, 3.6, 4.0 GPA with honors unweighted. My Junior year next fall I will be taking 3 AP courses and another honors course. My GPA not including my Freshman year is significantly higher than it is with it. Will my screw-up during my Freshman year be combined with my overall college GPA and keep me from getting into a high level university?

Most schools include freshman year grades for admission. Some, like the UCs, do not. Look on school web sites to see what is used.

You need to check with your school to see how they calculate GPA. Some colleges will recalculate your GPA anyway. What is important in your case is almost all colleges recognize and appreciate an upward trend. Many students have a rocky awakening to high school. It’s the rising grades as the courses continue to become more demanding that grabs attention. So while your GPA is affected there is often a bit of grace given if you bring up your grades in subsequent years.
