Freshman Year Oopsie (How can I compensate and move forward?)

I am an incoming Sophomore student and wondering how consequential my grades as a Freshman/9th Grader will be in the future when I apply to college. I’d also like suggestions as to how I can compensate for my faults this year:

1st Semester…
-A: Math I, Physical Science, Honors English, AVID, Spanish I, PE (All my classes)
-B, C, D, F: None
-It’s worth mentioning the classes mentioned above were all the highest classes offered to me as a Freshman due to my school eliminating sole subject oriented math classes (i.e. Geometry, Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus). The only Freshmen honors possible for me to take was English.
-History is also not available for Freshmen
2nd Semester…
-A: Math, AVID, Spanish I, PE
-B: Physical Science
-F: Honors English
-So during February, our family was meant with an unforeseen tragic event that lead to a slew of other unfortunate events to follow suit in the following months. I’d rather not elaborate on said events, but this majorly affected my mental health and my remaining family’s financial situation. Instead of all of my classes being equally impacted grade wise, I unconsciously ignored the responsibilities in my English class and partially my science class.

I am currently at a stable mental state and continue to improve my mental state. This Sophomore year, I have enrolled in 4 honors classes, not including Spanish (due to it not being offered at level 2) and AVID (my elective). Aside from these classes, I continue to be apart of 5 clubs, two of which I am an officer in. Volunteering wise, I volunteer at the Humane Society once a week and plan to join a new program at a shelter clinic as well. I also plan to participate in the IB program starting Junior year. I would extraordinarily appreciate any sort of blunt insight and/or suggestions in order to reach my highest potential in these upcoming years of High School. I acknowledge my mistakes and would like to overcome them! I still dream of attending a college akin to Barnard or UC Berkeley. What more should I do?

UC Berkeley does not include 9th grades in their GPA calculation but you need to repeat your English course since all UC’s require 4 years of English as an admission requirement. If you continue to do well 10-12th academically, then you have a chance at UCB. UCB wants to see good HS course rigor, but do not overload at the expense of your mental health or grades. Best of luck.

Thank you so much! I am definitely going to take a JC class in the near future.

So what are you doing to get an extra year of English in there?

I plan on utilizing my local community college and taking a semester of English!
