freshman year schedule

Is it a good idea to take all of your GE requirement classes freshman year? so that if you ever decide to change your major or if you find a different interest, you wouldn't have to play catch up.

Some people say yes, some people say no. What are your opinions?

Even if you do decide to change your major after freshman year, your GE’s won’t really take up enough time to hold you back. I think what would be foolish would be to try to finish up all of your GE’s in one year and completely neglect the major you presently do want to pursue. Stick to what you’re interested in at the moment and simultaneously take some diverse classes that might change your mind about your career path. But if you find yourself seriously doubting your current major after sophomore year, you really should look into taking a fifth year even if it will cost you some money (it’s what you’ll do for the rest of your life).

GEs are useful schedule fillers when you get a bad class signup time or there aren’t enough classes you need that are offered during a given quarter. For that reason, it’s a good idea to hang on to some GEs. On top of that, I don’t know too many people who enjoy taking GEs, so it’s very possible that you would have a lot of classes you don’t like for the first couple years if you keep taking GEs early on.

I recommend taking major-related courses early on because, that way, you can get an idea of whether or not you like the major as early as possible.
