I just ended my first year of high school, and pretty much all I profitted was absolute anxiety disorders and misery.
Here is my gradebook, my final grade terms.
English 1 Honors: B- (Some of the assignments required public speaking, my anxiety disorders made me screw those)
Honors Algebra 2: B (Always one test per marking period that makes me screw my average)
Regular Spanish: A+ (nothing to feel great about)
Honors World History: B+ (meh)
Honors Biology: C (I know it is bad, but this is heavenly compared to all my peers. A quarter of the class didn’t or barely passed.)
Regular Phys Ed: A
Regular Health: A
Half-Year Long Courses:
Honors Business Comp Sci: A-
Honors Business Principles, Practices, and Politics: A-
How screwed up am I? My final GPA will be posted next week, I am freaking out the sight that all my aspirations are over, done, screwed and killed. PLEASE HELP.
What are your aspirations? I’m getting between a 3.15 and 3.30 as a rough estimate of your GPA, which is a number many colleges would accept, especially if you improved over the next two years. Maybe Ivy Leagues aren’t in your future – but they aren’t for most other people, either. You are not over, done, screwed, or killed.
Not to worry! I understand you had a tough year, but you HAVE to show upward trend. Focus on extracurriculars and work for the grades and you will have a shot, I’m sure of it!
You’ve got to full comprehend and pinpoint what happened to apply those lessons in the years to come. As cliche and selfish as it sounds, you should only worry about yourself, not your other classmates and whether they passed or not. Saying half of the class failed and your average was bad because you had one test per marking period aren’t valid excuses. Work your ass off and do well academically in the years to come, do well on the SAT, and work on your extracurriculars. If you’re a resilient and perseverant student, your aspirations are by no means over, but rather enhanced if you’re able to consider freshman year as a learning lesson. However, if you continue whining about how you’re screwed instead of proactively doing something, then yes, you’re done. Even top colleges understand the transition between middle school and high school can be rough, and are therefore more lenient on freshman year.
Not too worry. When you’re applying, make sure to talk with your school counselor. Counselors write college recs and explain any extenuating circumstances. If you raise your grades through the rest of high school, they can write about how you persevered and overcame a huge struggle! Be proud of your work and don’t worry. This doesn’t reflect your complete academic potential and you have plenty of time to turn it around. Best of luck
Hi, I just finished my junior year as well, and I’ve come to realize a very similar thing happened to me my freshman year. Back then, I didn’t really give a sh*t about school; it pales in comparison to my degree of importance I place on school now. My GPA was essentially the same as yours after my freshman year, and I think I was ranked around the 400 mark of around 700. Not too great in my opinion. However, after freshman year, I had an eye-opening experience about the college process; I learned how important education truly was.
Needless to say, I got my a** in gear sophomore year.
Nearly perfect grades, and now junior year, I got a 5.2 both semesters. My average is now around 4.6 (weighted). I tell you with the largest degree of sincerity: it is most certainly NOT too late for you.
I am now ranked around the 40 mark.
Do not worry, just get your sh*t together.
Oh, and also tell your squad to step up their grades too, it’ll make high school a fun process that way
