I’m a freshman about to be going to sophomore year in a week… I definitely screwed myself and my future. I need to know my possibilities. I have had 5 Fs, and more than needed Cs… I however do join in on many extracurricular activities such as football, baseball, summer school programs etc. I work as a freshman too. I need to know what I am looking towards in my college future.
You’re a college student and got 5 F’s and more than needed C’s? How many courses did you take? How did you “screw up” that bad, were completely academically disinclined? By the way we can’t tell you what you are looking forward to your “college future” you decide that for yourself.
On the positive side, you’re facing repentance and I guess that’s the first step. All that I can tell you is (if you cant handle more) take 4-5 courses per term and build a studying habit. Study an hour or 2 per course and be more responsible. As of now that GPA of yours isn’t too pretty and you probably spent your (or parents) money in vain. Set yourself some goals for the future and continue working your hardest.
My bad, freshman in HIGHSCHOOL
Freshman in HS
Without seeing your GPA at the time you start applying for colleges, we can’t answer that question. If the all-Fs trend continues, then you will have a hard time going to college. However, if you get your grades up the following years and get good SAT/ACT scores, then we might be able to give you some direction. Figure out what made your grades in the classes failing and correct those mistakes next year. Cut down on the ECs if you need more study time.
@Zachshif Yeah I was arguing with myself whether you were in highschool or college. That changes everything yet the same thing applies however, study more and attend class, don’t see how you can pull of so many F’s while showing up unless you’re in a competitive environment. If it is true that your extracurriculars are on par, then you really need to focus on bringing that GPA up, not a mere 3.0 but aim for 3.7 or higher. Also make sure to involve yourself in extracurriculars that are relevant to what you intend on pursuing (in terms of majors). Study for the SAT or ACT starting next year or 2, don’t procrastinate the standardized testing, it will hurt you.
In terms of “how you look” to college counselors, luckily for you, admissions officers don’t focus on freshman year that much compared to your future years. However, they will see the recorded grades from freshman year and frown at it, make sure you really change those F’s to A’s so that they may be impressed by your change.
Okay, say I have a 1.25 GPA right now (I know it’s VERY embarrassing) if I bring my overall HS gpa up to a 3.0-3.25 will colleges see it as a good thing, starting from a low and picking myself back up? or will they think “man, this kid didn’t work at all in 9th grade”?
@Zachshif If you want to get into a really good college a 3.0 won’t necessarily cut it with those grades. Like I said, aim very high to neutralize that 1.25.
Are you a high school student? If so, you are not on a college bound path so far. Not only do you need at least Cs, you need some better grades too. And you need the knowledge taught in those classes as that is usually foundation for what is to come.Plus you need the study habits and self discipline to make it through a college class where there is more to do on your own an less room for slacking.
Some people only find motivation for school later in life when they see that they cant reach their goals without it. Then they often become good students but it is always a bit harder later when you will likely need a full time job to support yourself.
So if you want to go to college, try to focus on school instead of too many outside activities, do school work everyday. Get used to reading books, find ones you like at first even if it is graphic novels, and YA or sci fi. And get tutoring. If you manage to turn it around you can get into a college.
So I’m curious - with 5 Fs, are you not repeating your freshman year? Why not?
Because I also have a very high chance of getting a full ride to college through football, started varsity on freshman year, coaches almost guarantee the full ride with scouts from colleges like Auburn looking at me. It would ruin my football career in high school to stay back. I am just worried academically because if something happens it’s always better to have a back up.
Here is what i would suggest… If you cannot raise that gpa to a 3.0 by end of junior year, consider going to your local community college and then transferring from there.
N’s Mom has a great question… Since you’re apparently not repeating the year, are those classes required to graduate? It would really suck to pull your grades up and then end up with requirements not met.

By 5 Fs I mean 5 Fs like for a quarter, I’m passing all my classes lol
I’m not that bad y’all
Mama would kill me!
Things for you to know: 1) ECs are much less important than grades. 2) End of year grades are the ones college use. 3) Being coherent and complete in your questions results in better responses.
Colleges like to see that you have improved yourself through high school. It will be hard but try to improve your grades, or you will regret it later. (BTW, for college, it is better to get a good grade in a regular class than to get an average score in an AP class).
Well you said you were, so how are we to know otherwise? If you want real advice, give real information, not bs and waste everyone’s time. Your grades will be a factor in recruiting too. They are not going to take failing students.
