How challenging is the typical freshman year course load (math, english, health, etc.) and how much time study time did you guys spend? Are AP classes a good measure or are they harder?

Classes are as hard as you want to make them. There are easy classes and harder classes. You can decide how challenging you want your schedule to be. There's a lot more reading and writing in college than in high school. People who took AP classes seemed to find their equivalents easy enough. They're 100 or 200 level classes though, so they're easier to begin with anyway. Except for lab sciences. I didn't like mine.

freshman year is what you make it. remember that you don't have to take the typical high school load in college, you can mix and match your subjects and not take math, science, history...and what not every semester. for example, this past semester i took music theory simply because i wanted to. depeneding on your class choices you can spend alot of time studying or not. just read class comments but don't go to easy on yourself.

how many courses does the "average" freshman take?

i think it is usually 4 or 5 but i could be wrong

3-5. Classes are 4 credit hours each. PE classes are 1 credit. To graduate on time, you need 16 hours a semester, plus 4 PE classes over the 4 years.

emory requires PE credit? :( i hate PE

you can take meditation lol. there are a lot of choices, they're an easy A, and usually not that bad. it's not your typical kickball/dodgeball middle school PE class.

but I like dodgeball

5 courses + PE?
or 5 including PE?

5 including PE.

You also have to take FAME, which is an advising class. But all you have to do is show up. It's not really a class; you go out to dinner with the group and your advisors, go to Braves games, etc. etc. all paid by the school.

You can talk to your advisor to decide exactly how many hours you want to take. A lot of people underload with 12, especially if they came in with any AP credit, because it's that transitition semester. Freshmen tend to party a lot harder and a lot more often then a lot of the upperclassmen that first semester, too.

It's a lot to think about, but you have 6 or 7 student advisors assigned to you that are all upperclassmen, plus academic and staff advisors, so there are plenty of people to get specific advice from.

does the 5 cources include the freshman seminar?

anyone have any thoughts on what they want to take freshman year? i was thinking
Chem
chem lab
history of western philosopy
life sciences calc
PE

for my first semester. anyone else?

freshmen seminars are a normal 4 credit class. you can take it either your first or second semester.

thanks dgebll
