Freshmen 1st semester grades,good/bad or ugly?

Parents, what would an acceptable GPA be after 1st semester freshmen year??? Where do you sound the alarm, 3.0,2.75,2.50? lower?

Would need more info, like which college, which major, what kind of load…

I’d be concerned with any Ds or Fs, no matter the term gpa. On the gpa front, anything less than a 2.5 would be a significant concern unless the student was in engineering.

If the semester was less than stellar, I think you should observe the response of your student. Is he/she owning up to the responsibility he/she has for their grades or making excuses. My own first semester was a flop, a lot of fun, but a definite flop. I told my my parents before the grades came in and was very sorry for my lack of commitment in the classroom. ( I missed a lot of classes). When my grades came in, (this was before e-mail so they came through the mail), my father handed me the sealed envelop and asked if I had had fun. I told him I had a blast! His response, “when it quits being fun, you have to come home.”

First thing the next semester, I changed my major and continued my college career with straight As. It was still fun but I learned to manage my time to take care of first things first. It can be done.
