That's true. Except if I am deferred I doubt I will wait around for the 10% chance I would have of getting in RD after being deferred. I'd most likely apply ED II somewhere else at that point.

if you're not the party drinky type, would you still enjoy penn?

Oh most definitely.....there is so much to do on Penn's campus that you dont have to drink to have a good time....There are always shows and such that are fun to go to...along with having the whole of philadelphia at your fingertips....Also there is never any pressure to drink when you go to events where drinking is available...there are always a lot of sober people at the parties who still have a great time....

Dizzle

HI,
I applied really early to Wharton and I recieved a "likely" letter because I am an athlete. Do you know a lot of people that got these likely letters? It basically says that I am 99% admitted in December (unless I get arrested or drop school). I was wondering if you know anyone who has been rejected after recieving the letter...
Also, do you know anyone who was duall enrolled at a community college during high school and could transfer credits to Wharton?
Thanks

collegecountdown: Whats ED II?

To pinkearmufs:

what dadizzle said was pretty much true. However, not to bring you down, but a lot of activity on campus is centered around drinking and thus far, frat parties. Everyone is COOL with people who stay sober (theres never any direct pressure), but my sober friends can attest that its boring if youre the only sober one going to parties. A couple of my hallmates have been frustrated because everyone is taking part in annoying drunken debauchery.

I dunno, I'm not one of the sober people so I wouldn't be able to tell you what its like, but those are my impressions. I mean of course, dadizzle is def right, Philly has so much stuff to do its almost overwhelming. However, at least thus far, weekend activity is definitely centered around drinking.

But of course, despite the debauchery, this is still the best damn school in the country in my opinion. Especially wharton ;)

Play46-

I have talked to a couple of Ivy coaches who told me it means you are admitted. Just don't get expelled or kill your Great Books teacher....

What's your sport?

play46love - ED II is early decision II. Penn doesn't offer it, but some other schools, like Tufts, Emory, etc. do. The application deadline is the same as regular decision, but you are making the same commitment and getting a boost in your chance for admission. They notify you earlier than the normal April time, too.

collegecountdown - thanks yeah i didnt think Penn had that
ipod- tennis r u applyin to penn as an athlete?

would you say swarthmore activities are less centered around drinking then? my concentration would be creative writing, so i'm also wondering if swarthmore's close knit atmosphere would be better in that regard. what are the real differences, do you think, between penn and swarthmore? thanks a lot.

actually my decision for colleges came down to swarthmore and penn basically last year....Swarthmore is def a much more isolated community than Penn obviously....no one really leaves Swarthmore's campus while a lot fo students venture off Penn's campus...if you are thinking of majoring in writing Swarthmore in my opinion would give you a better education then Penn, but more goes into choosing a college than just academics....
I personally didnt want to be on a campus where I knew EVERYONE and that is wat swarthmore would have been for me.....but I mean u cant really go wrong either way...

Dadizzzle, I was wondering if you could post the stats that got you into wharton?

well pinkearmufs, by no means would I discourage you from coming to Penn, simply because of the drinking atmosphere.

Like I mentioned, and Dadizzle said, there is DEFINITELY enough to do that drinking doesnt have to be the center of your socializing. I know lots of people that do not drink, and while yes, some are frustrated because all of their friends drink, there are others who are having the time of their life because they feel a great balance between the two.

I still feel this is the best damn college situation I could be in: amazing campus scene (unlike columbia), amazing city at your feet (unlike dartmouth, cornell), "the social ivy" (unlike harvard), and the best damn undergrad business program in the country (unlike every other school).

What about drugs?

I'm not so concerned about the drinking (actually, I'm attracted to Penn's party Ivy rep), but I'm not so big on the drugs. Are they a big presence at parties and on campus, or not? And how big of a presence are hard drugs?

Drugs only exist if you hang out with druggies or if you go looking for drugs. Otherwise you don't really see them. You will see a lot of beer, though.

(I am also a freshman willing to answer questions)

i agree with legendofmax. again, its not overly present, but not invisible either. my hallmates and i know who is smoking weed, and we know when theyre doing it, but the weed scene is nothing like drinking. its not something people are doing at parties or trying to get other people to do. its generally a thing people will do in small groups in their rooms or outside.

ive yet to see any drugs harder than pot thus far though. and even when it comes to pot, its absolutely nothing to be CONCERNED about in considering the school. If its possible to enjoy penn sans alcohol (which is possible) then it is 100% possible to enjoy it without drugs

this might be a funny question but last time i visited penn i think i saw a lot of oil refineries before getting into University Park. Also it was really noisy and dirty with so many constructions. How is the pollution there? How does the oil refineries affect life?

Well I am from New York City so I use to seeing a lot of construction and noise pollution. So I cant really comment on that but its not that big of a deal cuz on every Ivy League's campus there is always some sort of construction going on whether it be the construction of new buildings or just renovations. As for the oil I didnt even know they were there....its not really a problem for me, but it may be for other people.

Dizzle

Are you talking about the oil refineries that you see going into philly? other than that...i cant think of any refineries anywhere near campus...
