Freshmen cal poly student warning you not too come

lskaiwalker-
This forum is stupid. You are not credible, you have been in college for 1 quarter and are already dropping out. That’s pathetic.

Have fun at Santa Barbara Community College… Im sure the education there is just about the right fit.

Counter-intuitively enough, it is an upside to Cal Poly that it lacks diversity. It forces you to broaden your horizons and meet different people. In large populations with a lot of diversity, we use all our options to zone in on the group of people who are nearly exactly the same us rather than seeking out differences. I was reading about this concept in predictably irrational. Clearly the OP has so little tolerance for being exposed to people who are different from him, he has to drop out of Cal Poly and go to a community college; it is rather pathetic.

I LOVE this thread! Where did you find it michael2? This thread illustrates exactly why your should research you school thoroughly and know yourself well. I am sure that this kid is long gone from the school. But, I thought that the OP’s second post was far more telling of his motivations than the first. Forget the pros and cons he wrote the one line in the second post says it all, “easier to find weed than alcohol” – classic!! Cal Poly is a serious school that has its parties, but let’s face it, the school is designed for kids that know what they want to do and are looking for meaningful work in their specific field of study. So, if your priorities are different heaven on earth can be absolute hell. My kid is in heaven, knows what he wants, doesn’t drink or smoke weed, has a sweet attractive girlfriend that he has been going out with for 3 years and is looking to build a future and be on the cutting edge of making that happen. His hobby is photography and the outdoors and SLO give him the opportunities to develop himself in that area. For kids like mine --Cal Poly is tops.

With regards to diversity? I must differ with what has been said. The school is very diverse. In fact, close to 35% possibly even 40% now are “minorities” including us a mixed race family with roots from Asia, Europe and the Middle East. My kid is a dual US-Japanese citizen and qualifies for Israeli citizenship too. My kid’s roommates are Vietnamese and Filipino. His dorm hall mates are White, Latino, Asian and, yes, African American (must admit underrepresented at Cal Poly). also, for a technical school it is well represented by women. Try Rose Hulman at 80% male – now that sucks!

LSkaiWalk was rather tiresome when he was posting here very frequently in 2010, first because he couldn’t figure out if he should go to Cal Poly vs. other schools for business. He just couldn’t decide, even with lots of feedback from folks here. He went on and on about “should I or shouldn’t I?” So when he finally went with Cal Poly he apparently had some issues once he got there. For one thing, he pulled the fire alarm in his dorm and got in trouble. That’s an offense and not just some silly prank. Then he basically flunked out of school. A really bad case of sour grapes in the end. So, that’s why he was telling freshmen not to go to Cal Poly. He didn’t fit in, so he blames the school. Here is the link to the fire alarm episode:

From LSkaiWalk during his first not-so-successful quarter at Poly. I also wonder if he got ousted from housing for pulling that fire alarm. :-/

I wish the poor kid the best. Success at Cal Poly requires maturity and focus. It’s just that kind of school – thank goodness.
