Freshmen -- CHECK YOUR CLASSES!

If you have registered for Fall 2020, CHECK YOUR CLASSES.

ALL of my daughter’s Fall 2020 classes switched to ONLINE today with no notice.

Keep in mind that if you are confirmed in UCF dorms, you have until July 6 to cancel your dorm contract without penalty…if you decide to just stay home and do online classes from home.

Good point. I saw that 2 of 4 for my son this Fall went online, one is TBD and one (in his major) shown lecture (classroom place and times).

That TBD is probably also online.

I signed in and went to Student Self Service. In the Academic area at the top, I clicked Plan and then set the term to Fall 2020. You will see the course names on the left – click those and there may be a paragraph explaining that the class is some flavor of online.

Also, they’re not done yet. **They are changing classes up until July 1, **so that one that looks like in-person now could change.

Very discouraging. I can’t think of any reason to pay dorm and living expenses for online classes – AND expose the student to risk, AND minimal campus and social activities, and… It just sucks.

I’m going to try to work something out, but I’m very skeptical that we’ll be on-campus in the Fall.

The problem I see with trying to substitute classes (IF I can find any in-person, which is unlikely) is that the courses that are online now are pre-requisites for other courses in her major.

For example, all math and chem courses are online, and she needs those now so she can take other math and chem courses in the Spring. So if I found an in-person Art class to substitute for Chem, I’d be screwing her up – not helping.

Stinks the way this happened without warning. However, I think it’s going to be the norm for most schools this fall regardless of the return to campus plans you hear about. The recent uptick in covid cases will change a lot of things on the ground quickly. Really a shame.

I don’t care what the norm is for other schools. And the UNPRECEDENTED CHALLENGES (!!!) the university faced doesn’t effect my assessment or response.

I care about outcomes and my daughter. And the outcome for my daughter is BAD.

No way to put lipstick on this pig!

We are stuck with UCF for this Fall term, and maybe for Spring. But basically, we are back where we were a year ago – figuring out where she will go to collegs.

Sorry for the typos above. My blinding typing speed got ahead of my tortoise brain.
