Freshmen dorms - UP

This fall I will be an incoming freshman at university park and wanted advice on which dorms to choose. Currently I wanted to either apply for east or pollock. I know East isn't the cleanest but everyone is a freshman and on the "same page". I was also looking at pollock and liked that it is close to town and a lot of the other buildings on campus. I read online that Pollock has certain buildings that are all or mostly freshman dorms; I wanted to know if this was true. Thanks

I am in the same situation as you and I will be choosing east because choosing any other dorms where there are not many freshman will hamper my social life. The sophomore’s or junior’s whoever lives at pollock will have their own groups of friends. You will be left alone in Pollock where not many freshman’s live. You should choose east too so that you will get to know many other freshman and you can go to classes together since most of the general ed classes like calculus and physics will be the same. I am half international btw. I am mostly worried about not getting to stay on campus after freshman year since its not guaranteed. I might have to transfer to another university if that situation arises…

I was also seriously thinking about east for the same reasons you had just said, but was going to at least try pollock if it was true there were freshman buildings at pollock… And I think freshman housing is guaranteed however after freshman year it is a lottery system… However I’m nit sure if there are different guidelines for international students

ha I am half international, not full(just 2 year resident of PA). I personally want to stay in the east halls even though the classes we take might be far away. How you switch dorms if you don’t like it ?

I heard that Pollock is pretty much the same as East, just a little less rowdy. Still, mostly freshman. I’m putting West as my first choice because they will still put you on a freshman floor and plus, you can have peace and quiet when you want. I heard East is like a zoo. As everyone said, “living elsewhere, you can always go to the party and leave, but living in East IS the party.” And all of your classes will be freshman too, it’s not like you are going to be completely isolated alone from any freshman!

My son is a freshman this year, and he is in East. He absolutely loves it, and has met lots of kids. While not the most convenient to classes, the bus stop is right in front of East Halls, so going to most classes is not a problem. Don’t miss out on the “freshman experience”…go to East.

It really is a matter of personal preference. Your interest in socializing and tolerance for noise and constant partying will play a big part in how much you like (or dislike) East. My oldest son lived there and hated it. Second son didn’t live there and after visiting friends who did was very glad he made the choice to live in a quieter dorm. But some people love it.

My daughter is a freshman this year and lives in Pollock. She really loves it and there are tons of freshman in Pollock. She loves it because it close to classes and downtown. She recently said how great it is to live there during the winter months - not only close to classes and downtown but also to dining, the gym and the HUB (student center). She has made tons of friends at Pollock. She was afraid she would miss out on things by not living in East but now says she can’t imagine living so far from everything - Shes extremely happy at Pollck!

My son is in East, and the bus stop is right in front of his building. Since a lot of freshmen classes are in the Forum, you can hop a bus for one stop…and you’re there (2 stops and you are at the library).

My D is also a freshman in Pollock. I would echo everything cr2012 says. My D had East as her first pick because that’s what her roommate wanted and Pollock as second. She says they both feel they were lucky to get Pollock. There is no shortage of freshman at Pollock and the location is a definite plus. She says a lot of kids from East eat at Pollock because the food is better and it’s too far to go back to East between classes. Her building is next to South, so she eats there, too.

I currently live in east and you pretty much live in the party. If you have no problem knocking on people’s door the first weekend go with pollock or south. Chances are there will be at least five or six other freshman rooms on the floor in south. Pollock has whole dorms full of freshman. The food in east isn’t the best either. I find myself going to west or pollock for dinner 4/5 times a week

Buy a doorstop and prop your door open. Most freshmen are willing and eager to meet people. You just need to be friendly, say hi to everyone you see in the halls.
