Freshmen Dorms

Since housing applications are due pretty soon I need help picking out a dorm.

I'm an international freshmen and I'm looking for a dorm that's close to classes, is nice, and doesn't have a crazy party scene but isn't dead-beat. Also, I got into the Honors College if that matters at all. I heard that they put all the HC kids into one dorm but I'm slightly worried that everyone there is going to be hardcore competitive students who don't have time to socialize.

So can anybody help me out?

From what you said, I think that Cobb, which is the honors dorm, sounds like a good choice for you. I’m pretty sure that if you want to request an honors roommate, you have to have the housing application in by May 1st or 2nd, so you should definitely check on that. It’s a really nice dorm on north campus and it’s definitely quieter than south campus dorms (where most freshmen are). But there are also a lot of freshmen there so it’s not dead.

However, they don’t put all the honors kids in that dorm, so you do have other choices. But if you want to live on north campus, definitely try for Cobb. I’ve heard that it is definitely more studious but not horribly so. I don’t think there are that many students at UNC who are extremely competitive and refuse to leave their room or the library anyway. You have a higher chance of finding people like that in Cobb, but overall most students at UNC have a good balance of studying and socializing.

Thanks!

Just wondering but what are the differences between the north campus dorms and the south campus dorms?

Also is Cobbs a suite style dorm?

Cobb is not suite style, no.

A general rule- South campus dorms are further away from classes, have more freshman, and are perhaps more social.

Thanks Blue_box. Would you say that I should apply to Cobbs as well or another dorm?

Oh and kind of unrelated but which dorms have a kitchen and what’s the best cellular provider in the region? AT&T?

I think all dorms have kitchens, though I don’t know if all of them have one on every floor. You’ll have to check the floor plans of each dorm on housing.unc.edu for that.

As for which dorm you should apply for, that all depends on what type of atmosphere you want. Expect to get south campus though.

I use Sprint because I want 3G+BBM and I can’t afford ATT’s $100+ monthly thing. So I’m not the best person to ask.

Well I want a dorm that has a relaxed atmosphere. Not a dork dorm, but nothing with other students getting drunk every night.

How is Cobbs though? But if I have to get into SC, what’s the best dorm in SC?

I won’t answer any questions that have been already painfully explained via multiple threads. Run a search and you’ll find 5+housing threads.

However, for the cell phone coverge, I’ve heard Verizon is the best. I have T-Mobile and it works pretty well. I don’t get reception in a few classes and the libraries (which is probably for the best), but it’s very inexpensive and I don’t mind.
