Usually when Tulane spruces up a dorm it comes in the way of furnishings. You might see new mattresses, desk chairs, carpet and paint. I for one liked seeing a new mattress in my son's room!!

Can anyone go into why Butler is "rundown and nasty"? How do the actual rooms compare with monroe? I am less interested in the furniture and more into the actual living quarters.

Is the student body that much different in the honors dorm than in others? And what other benefits are there to living in Butler that I wouldn't have if I went to another dorm?

my son lives in Butler, and I would not call it "nasty."

i know there have been posts about the differences between sharp and monroe, but how prominent are they? are they pretty much the same?

The cockroaches in butler are bigger than the ones I have seen in New York City.

Monroe and Sharpe are pretty much the same(a freshman dorm is a freshman dorm), but Monroe was renovated last year so it is nicer inside. However it doesnt really matter what you put down for a housing request between Sharpe and Monroe because it is completely random. I requested Sharpe and got Monroe.

GoPackGo, you say that honors is bs based on housing. Then you write glowing reports of Dr. Brady. The honors program is about education, no? It's about being with smart kids and profs like Dr. Brady, isn't it?

"If you didnt know, Cowen is our president and Tulane will never be like an Ivy(even though it is called the Harvard of the south) as long as kids never go to class drink everynight of the week and dont care about the school. I dont want to sound negative, but that is the majority of the freshman class and it can be very sad and disheartening for hardworking and caring students like myself." Perhaps if you had been in Butler with like minded students you would feel differently.

I concur with concerneddad. My son hasn't whined about cockroaches once.

My point about Butler is that not all of the kids who live in it are Honors students. I have heard it is about a 70%/30% split. Is that truly an honors dormitory? My opinion is no it is not. I have a higher percentage of honors students on the floor of my non-honors dorm.

Perhaps calling a program BS based on your opinion of how many students are housed where is a precision problem.

And it just might be that students who want a more supportive atmosphere request the honors dorm regardless of whether they're in the program. I really wouldn't know, but it's a possibility, and one that would make it an attractive option, not one that would make an entire program "BS."

GoPackGo10, I appreciate the point you're trying to make, although I disagree. I must say ctymom has a point about your precision. I am having a hard time making your numbers work.

If I remember correctly from freshman convocation, the freshman class this year was a few over 1600 students. If 15% of freshmen are offered honors, then somewhere between 240 and 250 students are in the program. Even at 20%, the number would be 320. If Butler holds 244 and you say the split is 70/30 (which I don't have the numbers on), then there would be 171 honors students in Butler, which would leave 83 honors freshmen elsewhere on campus. Perhaps your floor at Monroe is the exception rather than the rule, since I know several Newcomb honors girls opt to live in the girls only dorms. If the other freshman dorms have honors students at a greater percentage than Butler, then most of the freshman class would be in honors.

Check out the Tulane website today. There's an article on the new residential dorm and the prof and his family that will live there.

I was just at Tulane and not all honors students live in Butler, so that answers your question. As for Monroe bering rennovated, I was told that Sharpe is being rennovated for next year (when we as freshmen will be living there).

My question is ... are there difference types of people who live in Monroe/Sharpe?

It is all completely random and varies from year to year.

okay, thank you!

tulane takes like 10,0340345 years to build anything/ fix anything. they said the UC would be done by this year? and now they're pushing it back until 2006...dont get ur hopes up

ps i would never live in butler. i know 3 other people who left butler...Warren is acutally a really nice dorm (its all girls, but they have huge rooms and a roof to tan on, and I love Monroe, where i live right now, cuz its really easy to become friends with people on ur floor, and its nice to make guyfriends..

The UC was originally scheduled to take two years to rebuild with completion scheduled for Jan 2006. That may be pushed back because they ran into some unexpected structural problems but I doubt that will add more than a couple of months to the completion date. Have not seen anything official on it.

The new residential hall is on schedule and will open this Fall so not everything takes a gazillion years to complete or finishes late :-)

This has not been true for 2 years and again this year we will have ONLY Honors students in Butler House. We will have an 80/20 split between freshmen/sophomores next year, but they will all be H students.

As for "nastiness" Butler kitchens and lounges are not great, to say the least. I have been assured that we will be able to get them redone this summer. Money is always a concern, even in the best of times, but I am confident that this summer we WILL get them completed and renovated.

The downstairs lounge was redone last winter and was looking great. Thanks to Katrina it was redone AGAIN and is looking even better!

I hope I have not broken any rules by posting directly myself, but do feel free to contact me if you have any more questions or see the blog for more info.

I hate having to constantly defend Butler as a good housing choice but it really is. As far as my knowledge goes, sharp has a nick name it is sh**** sharp. Anything I have heard about that dorm is that for the most part it isn't that nice. Monroe I hear does have an awesome view of the city, but so do we on the higher floors of Butler. I can't really comment on Monroe as I've never actually been there.
I would stay in Butler, but I'm moving into Irby with 6 of my friends, so that should be fun. Overall though, Butler is a different atmosphere than the other dorms. The others can say what they want, but you have to live in this honors dorm to get it. I can honestly say that picking Butler over monroe or sharp was one of the better decisions I've made.

so i was thinking about applying to wall is it really that hard to get into?????......i haven't seen many people on the discussion boards lists it as their first choice----is it that because it is reserved mainly for athletes???? if that is the case i don't think i would want to live there......more information on wall rather than butler would be much appreciated :)

Wall is really nice. I haven't heard anything about favoring athletes, but any freshmen or current wall residents can apply for it.
