Freshmen Honors Housing

Just a reminder that Maxcy is not going to be the freshmen honors dorm anymore. They're opening a new honors dorm that is supposed to be ready by August. It's going to be brand new. It's not in quite as good of a location as Maxcy (it's on the corner of Blossom and Wheat, across from Moe's, yay!!!), but it's at least as good of a location as Capstone. It'll have single and double rooms, organized in "pods" with 12 students per pod, and each set of two pods will have it's own common area. Some of these pods will be organized by themes (languages, majors, stuff like that). I believe the building holds 500 beds and will house freshmen and sophomores. It has a cafeteria in the bottom, and is supposed to have a coffee shop. There is a game room, classrooms, meeting rooms, and a fishtank. Decent amount of green space, but not quite as much as living on the Horseshoe. It also has really comfortable furniture.
Maxcy is going to be turned into freshmen men's housing I believe.

How does the construction look to you close up? Does it look like it will be finished on time?

Maybe I'm a skeptic, but if you look on the webcam, there appears quite a bit still to be accomplished. Daughter had hoped to live in new dorm next year as a Sophmore.

We have the 2009-2010 University Housing Guide, and it lists Maxcy as a co-ed freshman center (which is good because I hope my d will put it on her list).

Maxcy is a great building to live in and a great location too.Be aware, the room sizes vary greatly.S had the tiniest room freshman year, the beds couldnt do anything but get bunked. Some of his friends rooms were so big they had futons in them in addition to the beds. But he loved living there .

Yes Cathymee is correct -- rooms in Maxcy vary greatly. It really is luck of the draw. My D and her roommate lucked out and have a spacious, corner room -- huge windows on two walls and roommate has a walk-in closet! They like living in Maxcy -- however D also thinks Capstone would have been a good fit too, particulary because of the dining facilities on site. However, Maxcy is closer to the Greek Village which comes in handy if you go Greek. Every dorm has its pluses and minuses.

cathymee- I actually think that it will be finished by Fall. A certain son of yours and I were just commenting this morning that every time we drive past it feels like they've made huge progress. If I don't go that way for a few days I'm blown away by how different it looks. They've got one wing almost completely ready to go and are working on the others.

article in today (Thurs March 5) Daily Gamecock: Honors Complex set to finish on July 31st.

Thanks for the update, let's hope the schedule sticks. D has been assigned her room on the 6th floor and can't wait to enjoy the new ammenities, particularly the on site dining facilties.
