Freshmen Housing - Allergies

Hello,
I’m super excited to come to ND in the fall this year, but I had a couple questions related to housing. I know that housing is completely random, and that the housing office will accommodate students with medical need. I have pretty bad allergies but they only last for a couple of weeks in the year, and I’m not sure if I should request one of the air-conditioned rooms.

Is there a disadvantage to requesting one? Will the roommate process still be random or will I be put in another pool with just students who have allergies? Is it worth suffering through those few weeks in the hopes of getting a nicer res hall? I’m really hoping to get the full ND experience and not be given a random roommate from a small pool, but I also think having air-conditioning would help out a lot for those couple of weeks. Ideally, I’m hoping that if I ask for an air-conditioned room I’ll just be paired up with any student already selected for one of the air-conditioned res-halls. Any help as to how the process works/ what you think I should do is appreciated.

I believe that in order to be placed in an air conditioned dorm you have to have documented medical reasons and I’m not sure that seasonal allergies, if that’s what you suffer from, will qualify. There are students who are severely asthmatic and some who suffer from cystic fibrosis and I think these are the cases they will accommodate. I have a daughter who will be a junior and suffers pretty badly from allergies but didn’t feel she qualified for medical placement. My younger daughter will be a freshman and has already filled out her housing questionnaire but I can’t remember exactly what you need to submit to get special consideration. To answer your other question, once placed in a dorm, whether or not for medical reasons, your roommate pairing will be random.

What do you mean by housing questionnaire? There weren’t really any questions were there?

^I guess what I meant was you have to sign the housing contract and there were a few other things that were different from a few years ago but, no, there was no extensive questionnaire like some schools have.
