Ok, so I'm going to PSU-UP and my dad does not want me to live on campus. My family was going to relocate to PA and he was going get me an apartment nearby campus, hoping I can get my residency in PA after a year (or is it two?). Does anyone know how residency goes in PA? Are freshmens even allowed to live in apartments than dorms? How does this work? It's super hard to call PSU since I live on the West Coast and the times are wack so I'd thougth I'd ask here... Thanks, guys.

Just found out it’s mandatory! Need to let my dad know…

Somewhere on their website, PSU describes how they qualify an individual as in-state. There is one year residency requirement but there is also an appeals process that you might be able to take advantage of if your entire family is moving to PA.

Here’s the link

[Undergraduate Degree Programs: General Information](http://bulletins.psu.edu/bulletins/bluebook/general_information.cfm?section=Tuition2)

Simply living off-campus for a year will not qualify you for residency. If it were that simple, most upper classmen would qualify, costing PSU millions.

you have to live in pa for a year before to qualify for in state, not while you are attending the university otherwise everyone would be paying in state. you can change your residence but it would be for an education purpose, which doesn’t qualify you for in state tuition. youll lose about 60 thousand dollars.
