freshmen orientation

I will be at Muir college this fall and I was wondering if we will be able to choose which days to attend orientation in June. They said on the site that we will receive more information about this "mid-may" but I need to know ASAP because I am going overseas during the summer and I do not want it to conflict with my UCSD orientation. I would prefer "booking" (if possible) the earliest orientation date.

Anyone know more?

Thanks in advance.

yea..any info on this?

i'm from revelle, and we had 5+ separate dates on which to attend. warren, on the other hand, had one or two different dates. for muir, I'm not sure. It could go either way.

the snail mail packet i received had orientation dates from June 19th all the way to the 31st. (or end of June)

there were around 5 (two day- overnighter) orientation dates to choose from.

I need the earliest possible! >_<

there was also two day orientation in september right before normal move in for students who couldnt make it in june, i would suggest calling them, they know if theyll have it the same this summer or not

there are five different dates... most of them are around mid to late june and theres a shorter version ( and less fun too) in september before you start school

is there any disadvantage in selecting the shorter one in september b/c I think I will have to resort to that option...

Will we get to decide which one to attend when we receive our "packet" in mid-may?

Any current SD'ers have any insight into this?

Yes, you'll be able to reserve a spot at the session you want. You can probably expect the following dates. June 19-20, 21-22, 23-24, 25-26 and another 1-day session somewhere in September.

any disadvantage of the september session.

Is it better to attend the earlier orientation sessions so that we can sign up for classes sooner? Is there a "first-come-first-serve" policy?

when are the sixth orientations?

@dolly

you dont sign up for classes at orientation, its a common misconception..you get a random signup time for first quarter sometime in august and you sign up online

at orientation they sometimes help you plan out what classes you need to take, but that usually entails them just telling you what your colleges ge's are and to follow your major's four year plans that you can find all online

So.. there's basically no disadvantage to going to later orientation date?

well most people like to go to the normal sessions bc you spend the night with people and its your chance to meet up with a lot of ppl.... i know many of my friends knew each other bc they were in the same orientation group or something like that....but its just more time to make friends

i went the september one and it was pretty bland
the other dates have a dance and have a part of the day were you get help on picking which classes you want while in sept theres no time for a dance and by then youve already enrolled for classes

so a two day orientation is better but sept should be a last resort

One of the reasons my son was thinking of Sept. date was because they get to actually move into their dorm one day early and avoid the chaos of "Move in day" the following Saturday. Aside from a dance, how much more would he be missing out on?? Kind of like the convenience of having to go down there only once and get him moved in and settled as well!!

I dunno, I'd still aim for a June orientation date. It gets you connected with the school and your peers. You get to make some friends, potentially a roommate if you really get along with someone you meet. If anything, going to the June sessions will give you stories to tell, not terribly exciting ones, but stories nonetheless. I suppose if convenience is the priority September would work but the June sessions are a better deal, I think.

@ucmom..yea..i kinda wish i did the sept date, i mean june is awesome bc it gets you amped for college and everything, especially with how ready i was for sd lol..but, being from sac it was costly to come down, and have my parents come and get a hotel for those dates, and then go to orientation for two days..driving forever and a day..and then having to drive again to move down, getting another hotel room, moving allll my stuff in the mad rush of kids at revelle, hardly being able to get through the stairwells....and then my parents having to drive back up again..it would have been very convenient to have just done it all at once, but i wouldve been a bit disappointed not going to the summer orientation

Sweet, I think I will be going to one of the june ones then. Thanks for the info everyone!

Another question: I thought the housing stuff has to be done by May? Therefore, if we find a good roommate at orientation, won't it be too late to request them?

Cheerchick,

Yes, you have to fill out the housing application by May to be included for on-campus housing with an earlier turn it date generally giving you a better shot at a single or the rare double, if you want those. I think you do more at orientation that let's you choose roommates if you want to. Orientation was a couple years ago for me so it's hard to remember. I do know that you don't find out who your roommates/suitemates are until a month before school starts so conceivably you could pick roommates at orientation.

When is orientation for Revelle students?
