Freshmen Orientation

Any parents planning on going to this? Any former parents have any insights? Is it something a parent does not want to miss?

We plan on attending; though we have not heard back from LMU on the date that our son will be attending. That is making it difficult to plan accordingly.
There are some links on the website with parent information on the orientation days and it includes a tentative agenda.
My thought is that this should be a good primer for understanding the business workings of the University (FA, Bursars office, student affairs), understanding the required academic curriculum and programs, thoughts on the transition from HS to College, and an opportunity to meet the families of the 2014 class.

I am planning on going with my daughter, also. 2 other friends of daughter’s parents are also attending. I am looking forward to learning a bit more about the school. Might be good, too, if we get a chance to see in some of the dorm rooms, so we have a sense of “space” when purchasing things this summer.

do not think it is crucial at all that parents go. but, it can be helpful, and have heard that many of the parent seminars various college offer can be very imformative. also, while it is costing me a lot to go, I want to savor these times with my daughter - there are not many of them left, so have decided the splurge is worth it!

I second BayAreaCAMom’s remarks. When my son was going away to college I went with him to the freshmen orientation. We both had a wonderful time. He met some people who he is still friends with 5 years later. I learned more about the school (not LMU), the financing, etc. Then, occasionally, we would pass each other while we were going to our individual “classes”. We still talk about that trip and the time we were “in college together”.
Now it is my wife’s turn to take our daughter and I’m sure they will both love it.

Do the parent orientations happen during the same time as the Student Orientations?

yes, there are parent programs and sessions at the same time as the students

here are some links - info is now on the LMU website

Thanks. I saw those already  I’m just waiting for the Parent Orientation RSVP links to come up.

Has anyone recieved the dates that their son or daughter will be attending from Admissions? We have yet to hear back after completing the on-line application with the ranking of the dates.

Parent orientation RSVP link is operative on this page:

Thanks for the link! :)

ALL:
The previous parent orientation link disappeared; a new one has been insterted into the webpage. This new one asks for payment for the event, whereas the first one did not. I registered again with the payment this time to be certain. Here is the link if you need it:

parentorientation

I’m curious, were you required to pay for the student orientation as well? When we registered, it was not requested, yet I see that there is a fee for this?

^ The student orientation is $218, and part of the student fees. It’s billed to you automatically as part of the entire cost to go to LMU as a “new” student, so it’s not necessarily immediate.

I talked with someone at the “Orientation Office” on Thursday and they said that the confirmation letters and a “gift” were going out by the end of next week. He would not say what the gift is. He did confirm though that my wife and daughter got the dates that they requested so if you need to make plane reservations, I’d give the office a call.

Ok thanks. I was looking over the fees and I was thinking that might be it. I guess you are charged that amount whether you go or not.
So no one has received anything yet? I didn’t even get an email. Its not as critical for us as we are within driving range.
