Freshmen Registration

My orientation is scheduled on 7/21 & 22. I am afraid by the time I register the classes, all the good schedules might filled up already. The school keeps saying that they reserve certain number of slots of classes for each orientation session. When I checked the Course Offering Directory over the weekend, the Physics 201 that I want to take in Fall, most of the schedules are closed already. I am so confused!!!!

By the way, do we have to take ENGL course for meeting the requirement?

being early is always a plus, and that goes for every semester when you register from here on out. however, the first week or two of classes there is often a lot of shifting and opportunities appear to change a section or add a course you thought might not have worked out. once you do register and know the courses you might like but can't get into, keep track of them throughout the rest of the summer, but especially as the semester approaches/starts.

They make certain classes appear "full" even though they aren't. There are plenty of spaces in first year classes. Remember: most students that have already registered have already taken these classes. Slots are reserved for each orientation.
And, like Wazhoom said, you can always change later.

They keep spots open = it might say there is only room for 200 people at this point but really they will keep opening spots until there are 300 people allowed in the class

ditto on the switching, you can get into what you want by "class shopping" the 1st week (sit in on some lectures, make sure you like the prof and syllabus)

engl for what req?

Is it pretty easy or at least doable to get some courses added in the first two weeks? I had one of the last time for scheduling this past orientation and only ended up with 9 credit hours.

Also, I really want to do course action for a class and show up the first day but one of the three classes on my schedule is at the exact same time. Should I just email the professor and talk to him/her at a different time?

You can usually email them ahead of the class and explain your situation and ask what to do. Seeming you want to course action into a course when another course is at the same time, I would show up to it just in case, and especially if the professor says so. Professors understand that people are adding/dropping the first week or two, and they're pretty lenient about stuff. If it's a 50min class, definitely don't sweat it.
Also: plenty of classes open up. You basically need to stalk ISIS though for certain classes. But main classes will open up.

Thanks for the tips. Does ISIS work in a queue system? Like if you get on August 1st and put your name on the waiting list for a class will it automatically add it to your schedule if it opens up, or do you just have to keep checking every day and manually add the classes when they become available?

A waiting list system exists. But, it's up to the teacher on how they add people to the class from that WL. Some take first come, first serve, some only pick majors, some take 4th years over 3rd and so on. Once a class goes to WL I'm pretty sure it doesn't come off, but I could be wrong.

FYI: ISIS is no longer. Hopefully you guys won't have to deal with it at all. So, things may change, but hopefully not, and this is how things work now.

I knew they were replacing webmail and toolkit but I didn't know ISIS was being replaced too! When does the new system go online?

I'm almost positive ISIS is being replaced. Dean J is on the committee of "UVA's leap from the stone-age to 21st century". Maybe we'll hear from her or her blog soon.

I don't think they are changing ISIS yet. I was just at orientation and they were talking about ISIS the entire time so I doubt they would tell us how to set up schedules then implement a new system. Maybe it starts next year.

Make sure to do the following if you really want a class that is already full:
1) Email the professor noting your high interest
2) Get on the waitlist, if available (check https://waitlist.web.virginia.edu/waitlist)
3) Show up on the first day of class and reiterate your interest in his/her class, also mentioning a note about the email

Do the freshmen set up the appointment with the counselor on the first day of orientation or do the school give you the appointment time? How does it work?

They'll give you a folder when you check-in on Day 1. There you'll find a sheet of paper that has your appointment time for course registration on Day 2.

Don't worry. I went to the first orientation without knowing much about what would go on, and everything worked out great for me.
