freshmen seminar???

hi i'm going to be a freshmen this fall semester
and many people were recommending me to take the freshmen seminar
but i have no clue what they are so can anyone clarify this for me?
-what are freshmen seminars, what are they like?
-is it going to interfere my other studies for the core classes?
-How do i sign up for the freshmen seminar?
-What do i get out of it?
-do only special people gets to be invited to the seminar?

OH! and another thing...how do you sign up for the honors program in sophomore year
if you werent invited to be in honors program in your freshmen year?

if anyone could answer these question i'd really appreciate it :]

i can tell you as much as i know [which i found out when i was looking at classes today lol]
freshie seminar are only for for a certain number of weeks
and honestly they seem really interesting i reaaaalllyy wanna sign up for one like ‘becoming evil’ but i’m also confused about how it will affect my schedule
you sign up for one when you sign up for classes
you take it for one unit, you’re mainly in it for the experience and to build a relationship with faculty and other students
you don’t have to invited though, you just have to be a freshman and sign up

and i believe honors-status depends on your gpa ?

really good site with all the info: [Freshman Seminars](http://www.ucsd.edu/current-students/academics/classes-enrollment/seminars/freshman-seminars.html)
list of each with descriptions: [Undergraduate Education](<a href=“Academic Affairs”>Academic Affairs)

oh got it thanks!!!

freshman seminars are really easy. there’s usually no work or homework. it’s just a fun class. it will not affect your other course work at all. take one. check the list above for the ones you’re interested in.

all freshman seminars are number 87 from each department.
for example, if you type in poli 87 in webreg there’s gonna be a list of all poli sci seminars, which you can pick from.

so yes, take one. easy units. =]

what are some fun seminars?

check out the list and see what YOU find interesting:

the really interesting one i took isn’t being offered anymore, so can’t say anything.

oh actually, check out the MAE one. New Cosmology. It’s pretty interesting.

yea i was thinking about that one but the time and date is TBA… so i don’t know if it will fit my schedule…

Are there even spaces left in the freshman seminars after the first few days of freshmen reg? My time is not until late on the third day (sad)

Yeah, there are a lot of spaces open for seminars. Most freshmen ignore the seminar because they think it is useless.

All the people here at Summer Bridge highly encourage taking seminars to broaden as well as make new friends in a small class. Plus they are easy classes and require only 1 hour of the day.

Would it be sustainable to take more than 1 seminar given one is already taking 4 coureses?

^Wouldn’t recommend it your first quarter. But if worse comes to worse you can always drop it a couple weeks in if it’s too much to handle.

It’s all about how you manage your time.

I wouldn’t consider seminars as adding to your workload

Most freshmen spend more than 1 hour a week idling and staring at a wall

It really is a professor/postdoc/grad student lecturing for 1/2-1hour with no work prescribed (most of the time)

So if you already have 4 courses planned for the fall, it won’t hurt you to attend a seminar as well?

Also, there aren’t any midterms/finals involved with seminars, are there?

hmm yeah…ditto my question.

i don’t see how i can fit seminars into my schedules for every quarter. i plan to maximize and keep 4 academic courses each quarter…but i was reading through the seminars and like 10 really interest me. but will i have the time? and is it recommended?

Seminars are pass/no pass. They do not involve finals. There is a little bit of work involved, but it is recommended to take them.

I am taking 3 my first quarter along with 4 classes for a total of 19 units.

So you can only take four seminars during the course of your WHOLE college stay?

yes you can only take 4 Frosh seminars, and you cant repeat them if the topic is the same, But, once you become a senior, they have senior seminars that you also can only take 4 of. The classes are really small so they want to ensure that everyone has a chance to take a seminar that they are interested in
