Incoming Freshmen here. I was looking at the Class Pre-Planner to see what my schedule might look like and there are certain classes that I can't take since they'll overlap. Because of that, I was thinking about taking a freshmen seminar as well as just to broaden my horizons. But I want to know what I'm getting into if I do take one.

These are the big questions I have (very common too):
Do these seminars often have a large amount of work?
And do they often have midterms and finals?

I know it depends on the professors but none of the rate my professor reviews mention the seminars. I'm hoping to get some ideas about what happens in these seminars besides the seminar descriptions.

Seminars usually don’t require too much work and I’ve never heard of a seminar having a midterm or final. Even if one did, seminars only have the pass/no pass grade option, so it wouldn’t cause too much stress. Hope that helps, if you have anymore questions, let me know!

Would you say seminars are time consuming?

I would say no. They’re may be a few assignments or a presentation in class but I don’t think they’re a huge time commitment.

Thanks lyss. Your quick response did help.
And I do have another question. Is it a good idea to take more than one freshmen seminar in one quarter? The information about the seminars on the ucsd site said we can only take 4 seminars. We can’t take any more beyond our sophmore year right?

I wouldn’t, unless there were two topics that really, really interested me. There were sophomores in my seminar but no juniors or seniors - I think by then, there’s really no point taking a freshmen seminar.

I think taking more than one seminar would be fine. And yes, after you reach the number of units, you are unable to take anymore freshman seminars. So even if you are technically still a first year, if you get to a certain number of units, freshman seminars won’t be an option.(Although I think there may be a way to get around this)

I only took one freshmen seminar (stupid movie physics) and there was no work for it. All it required was showing up to the seminar, which most people started skipping too. I only suggest you take one if you’re interested in it or you’re really really desperate for units.

For the record, you can take more than 4 but you only get units for 4. And I took 3 in a quarter and it was fine. They really don’t take up much time at all.

Oh I see. Thanks KingsElite for the clarification. I might sign up for more in the next quarters then.
