I've been told multiple times that University of Michigan- Ann Arbor do not count freshmen year when doing grades. I assume they do not look highly of freshmen year? Also, what is the reason of not counting freshmen year, as if it's not apart of the whole crucial proccess of high school.

-Very interested in hearing facts and opinions

It's because freshman year is a transition year into high school. The change in environment can have a negative effect on some kids grades, so their freshman grades may not really reflect what that student can do. They do consider the difficulty of the classes, just not the grades.

(this isn't speculation, this is what the michigan reps told us)

Oh wow, I wouldn't ( what's the word I'm looking for..) buy that. I don't think the transition to high school freshmen year can have such a drastic effect to your grades... it may play a part, but not deciding factor.

its because people like me who gets Cs in freshman year but bring there grade up dramatically still have the potential to do well in the university (I currently have a 3.7 at UM COE).
It's just a given statistic that the first year of high school does (may?) not express the true potential that a student may have whether its because they are trying to find the right social group, they just don't understand that "grades do matter" unlike junior high, or like me, didn't have an interest in academia until they've simply went through a couple classes. Although the "transition" may not seem like much of a hassle, it is to some. Nonetheless, i believe the prime times of high school (soph, junior) should be the ones that count for they most accurately describe a students potential in learning.

I got a lot of Cs in freshman year too, 4 if i remember correctly.

It's actually not that uncommon for schools to do this. Someone on here made a list a while ago of many colleges that don't count freshman grades and there were actually quite a few. I remember Princeton was on it.

Well I completely disargee. I myself find my freshmen year far better than sophomore, so that may play a part in my position as well as yours. Though I do not agree to the point where many universities, such as California, has decided to exclude freshmen year in part take of grades, etc... I think the whole high school proccess is crucial, and needed so to look at freshmen year just like sophomore and junior year.

I'm even surprise Princeton does so (exclude freshmen year).

haha, i did horribly sophomore year & well freshman year. if anything the transition to junior year was harder than to freshman year for me anyways...

my gpa is a full point higher not counting freshman year. i got more B's in that year than the rest of HS combined and figured out which EC's were reasonable to participate in and keep my grades going
